Description

JOB PURPOSE: The Nighttime Ambassador is responsible for engaging and assisting individuals experiencing homelessness in the downtown Dallas area during overnight hours. This role serves as the first line of outreach, providing compassionate engagement, crisis de-escalation, and connection to shelter and supportive services. Working in close coordination with Dallas Police Department (DPD), Right Care crisis response teams, and shelter partners, Nighttime Ambassadors ensure that individuals receive the appropriate level of support while helping to maintain safety and order in public spaces.


Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Proactively identify and approach individuals sleeping in public spaces within the designated downtown service area.
  • Conduct initial engagement to build rapport, encourage acceptance of services, and offer shelter options.
  • Provide transportation assistance to shelter facilities when appropriate.
  • Utilize de-escalation and conflict resolution skills to manage challenging interactions.
  • Contact DPD officers for enforcement response when individuals are non-compliant.
  • Coordinate with Right Care for mental health and crisis intervention support as needed.
  • Accurately document all encounters, including transports, service acceptance, and refusals, per City of Dallas requirements.
  • Provide nightly activity updates and weekly summary reports detailing outcomes, challenges, and service connections.
  • Participate in nightly detail briefings with DPD Station personnel.
  • Maintain open and professional communication with the City of Dallas Emergency Management & Crisis Response leadership, as well as community partners.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE: 1+ years in a customer service focused environment. Experience with homeless, low income, veterans & their families a strong plus. Strong interpersonal skills with ability to engage diverse populations with empathy and respect.

ATTENDANCE: Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in the employer's sole discretion.

LICENSES: Driver's License with a clear record required.

DEMONSTRATED SKILLS: Must have engagement and rapport-building, de-escalation and conflict resolution, and crisis intervention and trauma-informed practices skills.

VEHICLE: Must be able to operate and transport individuals in 15-passagener van safely.

WORK LOCATION: In-Person and ability to work overnight shifts consistently.

OTHER: Must be available and willing to travel to various locations and with such frequency as the business need dictates. Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others. Ability to collaborate effectively with law enforcement, service providers, and shelter resources.
