Laboratory Coordinator, School of Mining Engineering and Mineral Resources (Part-time)

This position works with students and researchers in laboratories in the Mines and Metallurgy building, assisting in maintaining safe operations in all labs, building management and having primary responsibility for the geomechanics lab which conducts testing for mining engineering projects across the University, the State of Arizona, and international mining projects. The Geomechanics laboratory has a full suite of engineering test equipment for rock, soil, and tailings. These include load frames, triaxial cells, and small and large-scale direct shears. Additionally, there is a full suite of testing equipment for rock mass characterization for underground construction. Sample preparation equipment includes water jet drilling and jet-assisted cutting. The Geomechanics lab also supports the San Xavier Mining Laboratory geomechanical monitoring and instrumentation program.

This position will be hired at a 0.75 FTE with the possibility of increasing to 1.0 FTE in the future.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Collaborates on externally funded research proposals.
• Coordinates with external collaborators to procure samples for rock mechanics and tailings laboratories, for research, teaching, and to support projects that benefit the mining and minerals industry and the state of Arizona.
• Works with the business office to invoice for testing services and acquisition of equipment and supplies.
• Assists in the instruction of lab and field courses on Geomechanics and Tailings, focusing on instrumentation and monitoring.
• Works closely with student groups to ensure the safe operation of equipment and standard testing procedures are followed.
• Provides feedback to students and course instructors on data collection and analysis.
• Works with laboratory investigators to ensure best practices in laboratory safety, including adequate training for all laboratory personnel and students.
• Assists with laboratory safety training to students, staff, and faculty, as needed.
• Assists in maintaining necessary personal protective and other safety equipment.
• Assists in developing safe laboratory procedures, as needed.
• Coordinates with University Research Laboratory and Safety Services, as needed.
• Maintains laboratory testing and sample preparation equipment especially related to geomechanics and soil mechanics.
• Ensures all equipment is calibrated and operating correctly.
• Assist with disposal of non-hazardous and hazardous laboratory waste.
• Maintains well-organized laboratories and samples.
• Works with surplus of equipment, and monitors equipment inventory.
• Serves as a building manager (with colleague(s)) from other departments in the building.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

• Ability to communicate safety training and equipment operation training effectively.
• Knowledge of laboratory hazards and their mitigation.
• Knowledge of laboratory equipment operation (electrical and hydraulic).

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

• Experience in laboratory management and testing, especially materials and/or rock testing.
• B.S. in mining engineering, geological engineering, civil engineering.
• Three or more years of demonstrated laboratory experience.
