Position Highlights

University Facility Services at the University of Arizona is looking to fill an Insulator II position. The successful candidate will possess Journeyman field experience in performing insulation work on various forms of commercial piping installations including chilled water, steam, hot water, and steam condensate lines. This position requires experience and familiarity with all forms of insulating material and their applications including indoor and outdoor projects. The candidate should be well versed in the estimating process including pricing and procurement of materials and the estimating of labor hours related to in-house projects. This position provides insulation support to plumbers, pipe-fitters, all Renovation Services, new installations, repairs and replacement projects.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Applies insulating
    materials to exposed surfaces of equipment boilers, tanks, hot or cold
    air ducts or pipes and steam generators for the purpose of insulating,
    protecting or dampening.
  • Lays out, cuts, forms and shapes insulation.
  • Applies cements, foams and adhesives to insulation.
  • Inspects areas to be
    insulated, ensuring they are clean and ready for insulation.
  • Prepares surfaces (such as cleaning or sanding) to ensure proper installation of
    insulation materials.
  • Installs insulation on
    heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, pipes, and
    ducts.
  • Installs insulation on industrial equipment and systems to prevent energy loss
    or equipment overheating.
  • Estimates material and
    labor for in-house renovation and maintenance projects.
  • Inspects existing insulation
    systems to check for wear and damage.
  • Repairs or replaces damaged or
    deteriorated insulation to restore energy efficiency and safety.
  • Recommends energy-saving solutions based on insulation inspections.
  • Ensures that insulation is properly installed to meet the desired thermal
    performance and energy efficiency goals.
  • Understands blueprints and
    building plans to determine the type and amount of insulation required
    for specific projects.
  • Work alongside other
    construction professionals, such as electricians, plumbers, and HVAC
    specialists, to ensure that insulation is correctly installed in
    coordination with other systems.
  • Communicates with clients or supervisors
    about the insulation process, cost, and timeline.
  • After installation,
    ensures that the worksite is cleaned and free of debris from insulation
    materials.

Knowledge,
Skills, and Abilities:

  • Insulation Materials: Knowledge of various
    insulation materials (fiberglass, foam, mineral wool, cellulose, etc.),
    their properties, and how they are applied.
  • Construction and Building
    Codes:
    Understanding
    building codes and safety regulations that apply to insulation work.
  • Energy Efficiency: Knowledge of principles
    related to energy conservation and how insulation contributes to
    reducing energy loss and improving energy efficiency.
  • Tools and Equipment: Familiarity with tools and
    equipment used in the installation and maintenance of insulation, such
    as spray machines, cutters, and protective gear.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to use hand
    tools and power equipment skillfully, such as knives, saws, and
    insulation blowers, to cut and install insulation.
  • Measurement Skills: Ability to measure
    spaces accurately and cut insulation materials to the correct
    dimensions.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to
    troubleshoot and resolve issues related to insulation installation, such
    as dealing with hard-to-reach areas or dealing with damaged insulation.
  • Attention to Detail: The ability to focus on
    precision and make sure insulation is applied properly to avoid gaps,
    which can lead to energy loss or inefficiency.
  • Physical Stamina and
    Strength:
    Insulation
    work often requires physical labor, including lifting heavy materials,
    bending, and working in cramped or awkward positions.
  • Installation Ability: The ability to
    install insulation materials efficiently and effectively, ensuring
    proper fit and function.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to address
    challenges on the job site, such as fitting insulation into irregular
    spaces, and ensuring the job is done safely and accurately.
  • Work Independently: The ability to work with
    minimal supervision, taking responsibility for one's tasks and ensuring
    deadlines are met.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work well in a
    team, collaborating with other construction professionals to ensure the
    insulation work integrates seamlessly with other systems.
  • Knowledge of the methods and materials for insulating.
  • Skill in fabricating, laying out and installing insulation.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • In addition to the education and experience minimum qualifications, Apprenticeship program, technical training experience required.
  • Three years of relevant experience, or
    equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of 4-year technical training program (steamfitter, plumber, or equivalent).
  • Experience working in a college/university setting.
