Job Summary:
Assists the supervising surgeon in the care and management of patients, and performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under the supervision of the surgeon. The Physician Assistant works closely and assists the surgeon in providing quality, efficient and continuous and cost-effective care during the patient's hospitalization.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Clinical procedures
- apply and change surgical dressings
- remove sutures and staples
- perform venipunctures
- insert IV needles and catheters
- catheterize urinary bladder
- pass nasogastric tubes
- remove chest tubes and monitoring lines
- irrigate chest tubes and catheters
- debride, irrigate, and pack surgical wounds
- remove drainage catheters
- Obtain, record, and dictate medical histories.
- Perform, record and dictate physical examinations.
- Dictate discharge and transfer summaries.
- Make daily rounds, record progress notes, write routine orders (comfort and diet, laboratory tests, non-invasive examinations). Prepare patients for discharge from the hospital.
- Educate patients and family regarding disease, procedures, medications, nutrition, health care and post-discharge care.
- Act as liaison between patients and surgeons.
- Act as liaison between nursing and surgeons.
- Provide education to nursing staff as required.
- Request consults from appropriate physicians.
- Participate in the care and management of patients in the outpatient setting, seeing outpatients either independently of in conjunction with supervising physician.
- Handle phone calls from patients and home health nurses.
- Evaluate patients who require a surgical consult.

- assist in minimally invasive procedures, including thoracoscopy and advanced foregut laparoscopy, open/VATS lobectomy, paraesophageal hernia and nissen fundoplasty
- close wounds and apply dressings
- transfer patient to post-anesthesia care
- Participate in the management of the thoracic surgery database (update patient records, run reports, harvest data for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons).
- Participate in clinical call coverage rotation with the practice's other midlevel providers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Virginia Physician Assistant license and NCCPA certification required.
- AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire
- Minimum of 2 years of experience providing surgical first assist support required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience providing operative support to cardiac, vascular or thoracic service required.
