The Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health (Columbia Mailman or the School) is seeking applications and nominations for the Thomas Campbell Jackson and Pamela Brandt Jackson Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management. The ideal candidate is a distinguished leader with a global reputation for advancing the understanding of health systems, policy, and management. This individual possesses a deep commitment to developing better, fairer, and more efficient means to protect and preserve public health through research and teaching that empower policymakers and health care managers to operate effectively in a complex and evolving environment.

Reporting directly to the Dean of the School and serving as a key member of the School's leadership team, the Chair will set a forward-looking vision for the Department, leveraging its historic strengths and pioneering research to address contemporary challenges in health policy and management. The Chair will play a crucial role in supporting and expanding a dynamic faculty, many of whom are recognized as leaders in their respective fields. This role will foster innovative educational programs that prepare students to navigate and influence the intricate landscape of health care delivery, public health policy, and management.

The successful candidate has a proven track record of academic achievement, substantial extramural grant support, and significant impact within the field. They will bring expertise in addressing current and emerging challenges in health policy and management, a clear vision for future advancements, and the ability to cultivate effective partnerships. Demonstrable leadership and management capabilities also are essential.

The Columbia Mailman Department of Health Policy and Management

One of Columbia Mailman's six academic departments, the Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) was founded in 1945, an era in which the nation was dramatically expanding and improving its hospital infrastructure, leading to a demand for a larger cadre of skilled health care administrators. In response, the Kellogg Foundation provided Columbia University with funding to begin a program focused on hospital administration.

HPM graduated its first class of 24 hospital administrators in 1947. Since that time, HPM has evolved into one of the nation's largest and best departments of health policy and management, with nearly two-dozen full-time and 80 part-time faculty, and approximately 400 students.

Its mission is to produce better, fairer, and more efficient ways of protecting and preserving health, grounded in the belief that policymakers need a deep understanding of health systems, and managers must understand and be able to navigate within the broader policy environment.

HPM pursues its mission deeply committed to its collaborative and collegial culture, its multi-disciplinary faculty, and its strong and innovative educational programs.

Chair of Health Policy and Management Key Responsibilities



  • Set the Department's strategy and marshal resources-human, financial, space, technology-to create an eminent and differentiated department. Success depends on collaborating and aligning the strategy with School leadership and the School's overarching priorities.
  • Establish clear, challenging, and metrics-based performance goals.
  • Define and lead the Department's research and education goals balancing the duality of its global and local work. Ensure growth through purposeful investment in research and educational activities that support Department priorities, while aligning with School-wide goals.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary activities that cut across public health and health care and enhance the capability for translational, interdisciplinary research and training.
  • Participate in fundraising activities, including the development of Alumni relations.
  • Recruit, hire, and retain outstanding faculty and staff.
  • Support principal investigators and other faculty within the Department to secure grants that fund research priorities.
  • Provide appropriate mentorship, career development, and feedback to faculty and staff, as well as provision of sufficient opportunities for professional development to ensure career success.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of creativity, inclusiveness, support, and development.


  • Minimum Degree: PhD, MD, DrPH or JD.
  • Additional attributes of the ideal candidate also include:
  • National/international recognition as a scholar in Health Policy and Management with a proven track record of scientific investigation and program development.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management expertise within an academic institution with previous budgetary responsibility and faculty leadership roles.
  • Credentials commensurate with a tenured faculty appointment in the Mailman School of Public Health at the level of associate or full professor.
  • A recognized record of research and scholarship, including a track record of external funding and a focus on interdisciplinary approaches.
  • A solid grasp of mission and priorities for a Department of Health Policy and Management within a top tier school of public health and academic medical center.
  • Demonstrated capacity to mentor, support and foster teamwork for junior faculty, staff, and students.
  • A strong commitment to students that is reflected by active and visible engagement in campus activities.
  • Proven commitment to diversity, inclusion, human rights, equity, and justice.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
