A Junior/Assistant Specialist position is currently available for immediate employment in the Madhani laboratory (madhanilab.ucsf.edu) in the University of California, San Francisco in the Genentech Hall Building (at the Mission Bay campus) to study how genetic background impacts the phenotypes of and evolution of fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans, which the Madhani lab has pioneered as a model pathogen and model organism. C. neoformans is a budding yeast, which is responsible for hundreds of thousands of infections worldwide in highly immunocompromised patients, including organ transplant patients and individuals infected with HIV. This single species is responsible for ~120,000 deaths annually.

Primary job duties include participation in efforts to profile pathogen functions using pooled screens using cutting-edge methods that employ high-throughput sequencing and downstream computational analysis. An additional major duty will be to construct strains and analyze engineered strains of C. neoformans using CRIPSR/Cas9-based methods developed in the Madhani lab. Secondary duties include: laboratory organization, ordering, and ensuring safety compliance. The selected candidate will work very closely with and receive training from senior scientists in the laboratory, including staff scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.

Required Qualifications:

• A baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in fields such as microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, or related field or at least four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
• A master's degree (or equivalent degree) or a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) with three or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant rank.
• A highly motivated individual who has demonstrated a passion for scientific research.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous independent laboratory experience outside of courses is strongly preferred.
• >1 yr experience in molecular genetics (cloning, PCR, NGS) is strongly preferred.
  
  
• >1 yr experience in cell-based assays including sterile technique and experience with the introduction of foreign DNA into cells is strongly preferred.
• Effective communicator, be able to take the initiative to address research issues, be able to work independently, be detail-oriented and organized, and also be a team player who works well with other members of the lab.
• Must exhibit a strong commitment to performing scientific research.
• Bioinformatics skills including NGS data analysis would also be preferred skills for this position.
• A two-year commitment is highly preferred.
