Organizational Unit Overview

Job Duties
The Assistant Director is a direct report to the Director of Disability Support Services and will coordinate the interactive services process for students with disabilities and will advise faculty, staff, and campus partners on accessibility and accommodations-related issues for students. The Assistant Director understands and disseminates criteria for disability services, meets with students to discuss access needs, receives and stores confidential disability documentation to support a student's eligibility for disability services and accommodations, collaborates with faculty and staff regarding essential course and/or program requirements and appropriate reasonable accommodations. This position will conduct campus-wide training activities on disability, rights and responsibilities, best practices, and design for individuals with disabilities.

  1. Assist students as needed in understanding the needed documentation to complete the eligibility review process.
  2. Conduct accommodation appointments, determine eligibility for services, and develop appropriate accommodation plans.
  3. Provide training and/or referrals for recommended accommodations and services
  4. Facilitate communication between faculty, staff, and enrolled students with disabilities on access and accommodation issues.
  5. Provide on-going consultation and problem-solving assistance to faculty and staff in the provision of appropriate services
  6. Refer students to appropriate campus, local, and state resources (e.g. North Carolina EIPD (Employment and Independence for People with Disabilities), campus resources, etc.).
  7. Assist students in understanding their accommodations, as well as their rights and responsibilities.
  8. Consistently demonstrates independent judgment and decision-making that is consistent with disability law as shaped by case law and is within the goals and philosophy of the department as well as the larger University community.
  9. Promote student self-advocacy, independence, and development.
  10. Create, organize, and maintain up-to-date electronic and paper records.
  11. Maintain and assist with DSS department communications.
  12. Other duties as assigned.


Direct Service

  • Review disability documentation including student's self-report to determine how the condition's impact translates to the higher education setting.
  • Engage in an interactive process in collaboration with students, instructors, and staff to determine reasonable academic, housing, dining, and other relevant accommodations.
  • Facilitate communication between faculty, staff, and students with disabilities on access and accommodation issues.
  • Provide on-going consultation and problem-solving assistance to faculty and staff in the provision of appropriate services and accommodations.
  • Assist students in understanding their rights and responsibilities. Promote student self-reliance and the development of appropriate self-advocacy skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all communications as required under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Create, organize, and maintain up-to-date confidential electronic records.
  • Stay current with legislation/policy and national, state, and local issues affecting access for individuals with disabilities.
  • Consistently demonstrates independent judgment and decision-making that is consistent with disability law as shaped by case law and is within the goals and philosophy of the department as well as the larger University community.

Student Support/Institutional Outreach

  • Participate in divisional and institution-wide initiatives to support training, awareness, and universal design to ensure access to students with disabilities.
  • Develop and provide consultation, technical assistance, and/or training to the University and community on disability-related topics to promote awareness, advocacy, and competence in ensuring access for individuals with disabilities.

Knowledge & Expertise

  • Maintain knowledge concerning legislation, policy, and best practices at the national, state, and local levels concerning access for individuals with disabilities in higher education.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to maintain and increase knowledge for best practices in supporting access for individuals with disabilities.

Other Duties

  • Represent the department on campus committees, initiatives, and events.
  • Actively participate in divisional workgroups as assigned by the director.
  • Provide departmental coverage and support, including testing services, on an as - needed basis

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Post-Baccalaureate degree and 1 year of relevant experience required; will accept an undergraduate degree and 3 years relevant experience in substitution
  • Demonstrated knowledge of disability rights.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
None
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., education, psychology, social work, vocational rehabilitation, etc.)
  • Experience working in a college or university setting.
  • Experience working in a disability services office.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the development process associated with pre-college and college-age students as well as adult populations and returning veterans.
  • Knowledge, training, or experience interpreting federal and state laws regarding disability rights and their application to higher education.
  • Familiarity with various neuropsychological, psycho-educational and psychological assessment batteries used in the diagnosis of learning disabilities, mental health conditions, AD/HD and traumatic brain injury, and interpreting the data from such reports into appropriate accommodations for the post-secondary setting.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology.
  • Knowledge of universal design principles.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: collaboration, conflict resolution, time management, reliability, adaptableness, strong work ethic, and communication skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills
