Department:UAPB | SAFHSDepartment's Website: Summary of Job Duties:A long-term goal of UAPB is to develop and contribute to the next generation of scientists trained in FANH and USDA careers. The first proposed approach to accomplishing this goal is to build and sustain partnerships with our USDA offices, public schools, and surrounding 4H clubs to introduce youth to FANH and USDA careers at an early age through peer-to-peer mentoring (Mentors from UAPB 1890 and MANRRS Scholars), summer camps for public school teachers with junior/high school kids, field trips, sponsorship of a Junior MANRRS Chapter, and promote the farm-to-school initiative within the local schools to provide those non-formal educational opportunities and positive youth development.Duties and Responsibilities: The prospective candidate will be responsible for the management of the UAPB Livestock Farm, which includes managing livestock animals (E.g., Cows, goats, chickens, rabbits, etc.). The candidate will assist the animal science faculty and the UAPB farm manager. The candidate will also oversee the cleanliness, well-maintained, and/or working animal facilities, including cattle handling facility, goat barn, farrowing house, pig grow-out and finishing units, rabbi units, and poultry facility. This individual will also assist and facilitate student outreach activities during laboratory sessions and on and off campus farm demonstrations. Other detailed job responsibilities to include: *Conducting/maintaining/recording data protocols on the farm *(Assist in) mentor/Supervise student extra-help on farm *Conducting Tours on the Farm *(Assist in) monitoring of livestock health *Develop and help with animal science labs. *(Assist with) facility maintenance including fence-report problems to Farm Manager * (Assist with) inventory-expendable & durable-report needs to Farm Manager *Check all plumbing & hydrants-report issues immediately to Farm Manager *Milk animals who lost their young/develop mastitis/bottle feed young * (Assist with) vaccinate, de-worm, de-horn, castrate and hoof trim animals *(Assist in) pasture, reproduction and feed management *Assist with experimental protocols: oCoordinate with researcher; and assist with reporting deviations oRemedy deviations; and assist with grad students (does not mean daily maintenance of animals) Responsibilities in accordance with Animal Science faculty: *(Assist with) conducting Tours on the Farm and Assisting Outreach Director *Water and feed livestock research animals daily *(Assist with) ordering Animal Science lab and field supplies *(Assist in) animal sample collections (fecal and blood) *(Assist in) record keeping Qualifications: A minimum of a high school diploma with 5+ years of experience or a B.S. in biology or animal science or a related field with 2+ years of experience. Individuals must have experience in data collection and processing, feed analysis, collection of animal samples, experimental design, and farm maintenance and be computer literate. Personal Characteristics: The successful candidate should possess the ability to assume responsibility, work well with limited supervision, complete tasks in a timely manner, be courteous and disciplined, and cultivate a good working relationship with co-workers.
