Organizational Unit Overview |
The Department of Pharmacology consists of 13 full-time faculty members, nine full-time research technicians, three postdoctoral scientists, two full-time administrative staff, and 13 graduate students. The department teaches pharmacology, therapeutics, and toxicology to medical, dental, graduate, and nursing students. A wide variety of specialized courses are also taught for graduate students. The educational objective of the department is to provide a sound basic foundation upon which medical and dental students may build rational approaches to drug therapy regardless of the area of clinical specialization. The graduate program through the Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacology and Toxicology Concentration, is broadly based to prepare students for careers in academics, research, government, industry, and medicine.
The Team Cooke Bailey Lab focuses on researching ocular diseases in
underserved
populations, with an emphasis on complex conditions like glaucoma that are influenced by genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors. As part of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and the Center for Health Disparities at East Carolina University, our work integrates clinical, community-based, and genomic research to address vision health. |
Job Duties |
This position will support an
NIH R01-funded study investigating the genetic and clinical factors that contribute to glaucoma and vision health disparities. The Data Scientist will play a key role in building and managing a secure, relational database for clinical and genetic data.
This position will also contribute to data integration, quality control, and statistical analyses, working closely with the project's biostatistician and other members of Team Cooke Bailey. Additional responsibilities include summarizing findings from both internal studies and collaborative projects, and supporting research on the intersection of genetics, social determinants of health, and vision care access.

- Access and utilize data from various sources, including the Million Veteran Program, NIH All of Us Research Program, regional clinical data systems, and lab-generated datasets from ongoing studies, while ensuring compliance with NIH data security guidelines, ECU, and ECU Health data governance policies. - Support statistical genetics workflows, including data formatting, quality control, and preliminary analyses. (15%)
