Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Public Health Biologist supervisor, Vector-Borne Disease Section of CDPH within the California Department of Public Health Infectious Diseases Branch (IDB), perform as a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge within the vector borne disease programs to strategize, design, develop and administer all aspects of the vector-borne disease surveillance system. Create effective quality control protocols and provide oversight of the compilation processes to ensure integrity of data and workflow, develop and manage data practices to ensure accuracy, consistency, and security of public health data. Analyze data to develop, compile and disseminate reports to support epidemiological investigations to advise management. Apply advanced data information management concepts to integrate multi-variable, complex data from multiple sources, including laboratory results, field reports, and public health records. The role includes the development and management of complex data systems used for vector-borne disease surveillance, managing the West Nile virus website, and support of the public health research initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, data science, computer science, data management related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in data management, public health, systems administration, or similar environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards, statistical analysis, and public health data systems.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as SQL, Python, PHP, GIS or other relevant tools.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets, data exchange, data integration and data modeling.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, for conveying and presenting technical information to multiple levels of stakeholders, including non-technical audiences.
  • Proven information design skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of data surveillance.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization
  • Demonstrated advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced analytical and design skills, including the ability to abstract information requirements from realworld processes to understand information flows in computer systems.
  • Critical thinking skills and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in public health and/or public health data
  • Experience working for or with governmental organizations.
  • Knowledge of university and state administrative and IT policies.
  • Knowledge of GIS mapping and spatial analysis for vector-borne disease surveillance.

This role reports to the UCD Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH) in the Department of Public Health Sciences.
