Senior Accountant -Office of Comptroller


Annual Salary Range: $58,677 - $87,984

Job Summary: The principal purpose of this position is to support the Central Accounting team. This is done through the creation of exhibits for the Single Audit, drafting exhibits for the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and assisting external auditors with the annual audit of Milwaukee County governmental reporting, investment reporting, fund monitoring, account reconciliations, and providing technical support to other areas.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Assists in preparation of the yearly ACFR. Contributes to the letter of transmittal, management discussion analysis, footnotes, and statistical sections. Responds to auditors by gathering and preparing relevant information.
  • Monitors and inputs information from investment sources, reports and reconciles this activity to the general ledger, and prepares quarterly Investment Earnings Reports for the Finance Committee. Prepares Segmented Time Distribution Report for the ACFR.
  • Assists with preparation and filing of the annual State Report.
  • Updates the fixed asset module by gathering data from other areas, inputting into accounting system, and balancing the system. Reconcile all balances at year end, and periodically during the year.
  • Processes cash receipts, journal vouchers and approvals, JOB authorizations, activity codes, and budget transfers with input to the accounting system as necessary. Assist with managing accounting system and closings. Manage record storage and other duties as assigned.
  • Reconciles payroll accounts. Prepares payroll uploads to general ledger.
  • Assists peers and other departments with projects, questions and concerns. Gathers, analyzes, interprets, reports and advises on special projects.
  • Reviews and reconciles balance sheet accounts ensuring accuracy in reporting. Prepares reports in compliance with administrative rules, County Ordinances, GAAP, Federal and State laws.
  • Captures all State and Federal funding for the Single Audit report in a timely and accurate manner and responds to questions from the auditors in regard to this data. Review/maintenance of State Grants Register.
  • Assist with current and/or new system enhancement, testing and implementation.
  • Assist with ongoing general ledger maintenance and monthly and year end closing.



Minimum Education and Years of Experience Required:



  • Current State of Wisconsin resident
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited university/college in accounting or related field.
  • Three (3) or more years of practical work experience in accounting or related field.
  • Knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets



Preferred:



  • CPA desirable, but not required.



Required Skills and Abilities:


Team player with the ability to work harmoniously and effectively with both co-workers and external contacts. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and expected to stay up to date with changes in GAAP, GASB, and FASB. Read and write routine reports, correspondences, and speak effectively before both internal and external groups. Read, analyze, and interpret technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Understand and follow instructions, analysis/reasoning, communication/interpretation, math/mental computation, problem solving, and composing reports.
