Job Description

WGL - Environmental Technician I
The Environmental Technician I works under the general supervision of the Environmental Supervisor for the Remediation Program and regularly assists the Hazardous Waste Coordinator, environmental staff and other technical personnel. The technician also coordinates with contractors and procurement staff as needed. This intermediate-level role is responsible for supporting environmental field operations. Key responsibilities include operation and maintenance of the East Station groundwater treatment system, conducting environmental sampling (e.g., groundwater and treatment plant discharges), performing inspections such as hazardous waste storage shed reviews, and assisting with the environmental incident response program. The technician also ensures the readiness of response equipment. Must be comfortable performing foundational fieldwork while supporting more complex departmental tasks. While routine duties are performed independently, the Environmental Technician I is expected to assist with advanced operations under general supervision.

You Will:

Manufactured Gas Plants (MGP) Program

  • Assist Environmental Supervisor or other designated environmental staff with inspections and routine maintenance of East Station groundwater treatment system components; helps collect samples, take measurements, and maintain records under supervision

  • Perform basic operational and maintenance tasks such as rinsing or flushing treatment plant components including the oil-water separator and carbon/clay units and changes bag filters

  • Assist Environmental Supervisor or other designated environmental staff with identifying and documenting parts and supplies needed for the groundwater treatment system; coordinates with Environmental Supervisor or other designated environmental staff and/or procurement personnel to initiate orders and track deliveries

  • Operate pumps and tubing to support coal tar recovery from wells located at any of the MGP sites formerly owned and operated by WG and transfers tar to a collection tank. Assists Environmental Supervisor or other designated environmental staff with coordinating removal or draining of tar collection tank(s)/drum(s) by a specialized contractor

  • Clean and maintain field equipment, including pumps, generators, compressors, sampling tools, and meters (e.g., water level meters, Hnu meters, CGI)

  • Collect samples following established procedures, such as those documented in the Operations and Maintenance Manual for East Station, and completes chain-of-custody forms with oversight from Environmental Supervisor or other designated environmental staff

  • Report operational issues with the treatment system to Environmental Supervisor or other designated environmental staff and assists with troubleshooting under guidance

  • Coordinate with specialized contractors as needed, ensuring work is performed safely and in accordance with established procedures; reports progress and issues to Environmental Supervisor or other designated environmental staff

  • Maintain field logs/records and monitoring data for internal use

Hazardous Waste Program

  • Support hazardous waste handling and documentation activities in accordance with DOT and RCRA guidelines; candidates with relevant certifications are preferred

  • Assist Hazardous Waste Coordinator or other designated environmental staff with weekly inspections of hazardous waste accumulation points at SOC and other WG stations, as requested

  • Complete inspection checklists, documents findings, and reports observations/issues to the Hazardous Waste Supervisor or other designated environmental staff; flags any stored wastes nearing regulatory disposal deadlines to ensure timely and compliant removal

  • Prepare basic labels for hazardous waste prior to pickups. Ensures drums are closed. Moves drums to staging areas for pick up by contractor. Ensures materials are staged for timely removal

  • Support maintenance of the drum tracking system and helps deliver waste handling equipment and supplies to field locations

  • Handle waste materials under supervision from Hazardous Waste Coordinator or other designated environmental staff. Does not sign manifests unless DOT/RCRA certified. Candidates with relevant certifications are preferred

  • Collect condensate samples following established procedures and completes chain-of-custody forms with oversight from Hazardous Waste Coordinator or other designated environmental staff

  • Maintain OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER

  • Participate in required training to maintain eligibility for CDL. Hazmat endorsement preferred or in progress

  • Identify confined spaces and if certified, may perform tasks within them when necessary, following proper supervision by Environmental Supervisor, Hazardous Waste Coordinator or other designated environmental staff and all applicable safety protocols

  • Use a respirator when required, such as in confined spaces or areas with gaseous atmospheres, following fit testing and training

Emergency Response Program

  • Support inventory management by tracking emergency response supplies and notifying the supervisor when items need to be reordered

  • Perform routine checks and basic maintenance on emergency response equipment (e.g., mercury vacuums, PIDs) and reports any issues to supervisor for further action

General Activities

  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and contractors to relay field observations, equipment needs, and scheduling updates

  • Maintain calendars and schedules for inspections, sampling events, and equipment maintenance under the guidance of Environmental Supervisor or other designated environmental staff

  • Use Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Outlook) and PDF software to enter data, prepare reports, and manage documentation

  • Assist environmental staff with organizing digital and physical files, including inspection logs, sampling records, and training materials

  • Maintain spill kits, PPE inventory, and emergency supplies

  • Attend department meetings, team meetings, safety briefings and toolbox talks

  • Maintain personal certifications (e.g., HAZWOPER, Driver's License, CDL)

You Have:

  • 2-3 years of environmental fieldwork or related technical experience

  • High school diploma or GED (environmental coursework preferred)

  • Basic mechanical aptitude and a working understanding of mechanical systems; assists with the use and routine maintenance of pumps, generators, compressors, meters, and related tools

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)

  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy

  • Ability to work independently and follow SOPs

  • Must successfully complete respirator qualifications to include all hygiene requirements needed to wear a tight-fitting respirator

  • Ability to obtain and maintain 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification

  • Valid driver's license

  • CDL, holders are subject to testing under federal highway regulations

  • CDL with Hazmat endorsement (preferred or in progress)

  • DOT and RCRA certification (preferred or in progress)

  • Class 1 Operator Certification from Maryland or equivalent (preferred or ability to obtain)

  • Forklift (preferred or ability to obtain)

  • Confined Space Entry (preferred or ability to obtain)

  • Must meet Company driving standards
