Job Summary

Protective Services Officers (PSOs) support the UC Davis Police Department by enforcing laws, UC regulations, and security policies, and by promoting a safe healthcare environment. PSOs deter criminal activity, respond to incidents, and maintain order across UC Davis Health facilities, with primary assignments at the UC Davis Medical Center.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patrol UC Davis Health locations, including Sacramento campus facilities, on foot and by vehicle.
  • Maintain vigilance and control access at fixed posts.
  • Conduct rounds, provide escorts, and secure entryways/exits.
  • Protect staff from verbal and physical aggression; resolve conflicts.
  • Secure buildings to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Inspect doors, windows, lighting, alarms, and locks; report deficiencies.
  • Identify and report hazardous or unsafe conditions.
  • Assist police with crowd, traffic, and access control.
  • Monitor CCTV and access control systems; report malfunctions.
  • Assist in restraining/apprehending combative individuals as needed.
  • Prepare incident reports and maintain daily activity logs.

Special Requirements
LIVE SCAN/FINGERPRINTING REQUIRED - This role may involve processing patient property and handling cash, cash equivalents, and valuables. PSOs must complete fingerprinting as part of the Police Department's process due to access to criminal history systems (CLETS).

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload a license and/or certification if required for the position

  • California Registered Security Guard - Must have a current State of California Security Office Guard Card or a temporary work Guard Card Permit pending clearance from the State of California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS)
  • Must hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is per local policies/procedures, and enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • High School Diploma, GED/equivalent, or work-related experience/training
  • Completion of the International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Basic Certification within 90 days of hire
  • Excellent oral, written, and verbal communication skills to convey clear and concise information to management, the general public, staff, and students, such as giving directions, writing reports/incidents, explaining policy and procedures, and encouraging others to comply with requests
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships and to deal courteously with the general public, patients, staff, faculty, students, peers, supervisors, and subordinates.
  • Ability to perceive the possibility of hazardous situations, react quickly, and take appropriate action, based on established policies and procedures and departmental guidelines.
  • Must adhere to the University of California, Hospital & Departmental, and Policies and Procedures
  • Ability to function and work in a diverse work environment
  • Makes appropriate behavioral changes after performance appraisal and/or counseling
  • Conducts self professionally and courteously, positively representing UC Davis Health
  • Demonstrates good judgment in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient health information and all other sensitive information
  • Coordinates with others to ensure adequate coverage for breaks and shift changes
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction
  • Ability to maintain a professional work appearance to include wearing a company-provided uniform and ballistic vest
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor under stressful conditions and utilize conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy, patience, and courtesy in dealing with a wide variety of individuals
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods in environments involving contact with sick, injured, or hostile patients and visitors
  • Duties may require working in inclement weather conditions

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of recent experience working in the security field, law enforcement, or military
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the exercise of defensive tactics
  • Ability to carry and correctly and safely use handcuffs

Department Overview

The Protective Services Unit ensures the safety and security of the UC Davis Health community-including faculty, staff, students, patients, visitors, and property-by following state law, UC Davis Police Department General Orders, and UC Davis Health policies. Officers work under the direction of a PSO Supervisor and perform assigned duties within established guidelines, seeking Management approval for matters outside policy.

Work Environment

  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco-free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis-owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

  • Must be able to work overtime as requested.
