Summary
Responsible for facilitating effective communication between healthcare providers and Deaf or hard-of-hearing patients. Does this position require Patient Care? Yes Essential Functions -Provide accurate and confidential interpretation services between healthcare providers, patients, and their families who use American Sign Language as their primary means of communication. -Serve as a cultural mediator, bridging the gap between Deaf or hard-of-hearing patients and healthcare professionals to ensure understanding and respect for cultural differences. -Demonstrate a strong understanding of medical terminology, abbreviations, and procedures to facilitate accurate interpretation of medical discussions. -Maintain a high level of sensitivity and professionalism while interpreting sensitive and confidential medical information. -Maintain accurate and detailed records of interpreted encounters, including dates, times, locations, and names of participants. Education High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? Yes Licenses and Credentials Experience Experience working as a medical interpreter, preferably in a healthcare or medical setting 2-3 years required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Solid understanding of medical terminology, procedures, and protocols across various medical specialties. - Adhere to professional standards of ethics, confidentiality, and impartiality as outlined by interpreting organizations. - Excellent communication skills, including active listening and clear and concise interpretation abilities. - Demonstrate competency and sensitivity towards the Deaf community and their unique communication needs. - Exhibit professionalism, punctuality, and reliability in all aspects of the interpreting role. - Proficiency in using video remote interpreting platforms and other interpreting-related technology.
