Brief Summary of Work for this Position |
The University of North Carolina Wilmington's Precollege Programs and College Access department helps students from diverse backgrounds prepare for college through academic enrichment, mentoring, and financial aid guidance. Its goal is to ease the transition from high school to higher education and promote lifelong learning. Programs include Upward Bound Math & Science, a federally funded
TRIO initiative that supports students pursuing
STEM fields; the Precollege Mentoring Program, which offers two years of free mentoring and college prep to high-achieving students with limited college exposure; and Advise NC, which places recent graduates in underserved high schools to assist with college applications and enrollment.
Regular responsibilities may include, but are not limited to
- Participate in activities, support programming, and interact with program participants to build trust and foster relationships
- Encourage students to consider a broad range of appropriate post-secondary choices and assist them in developing a comprehensive list of good fit and match options
- Help students and families complete and submit admissions, financial aid, and scholarship applications
- Record up-to-date service activity data using the appropriate software (training provided)
- Light to moderate lifting required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
- Bachelor's degree
- Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, problem solving, effective organizational skills, and detail orientation
- Must exhibit cultural competence and possess a broad understanding of student academic, developmental, and social needs

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience |
- Experience working with high school aged youth
- Proficiency in languages other than English
- Mentoring or Academic Advising experience
- Experience supporting projects and working in teams
- Priority given to graduates of UNCW during the initial application review process

Please note, this is a temporary position. The length of the assignment will be based on department need with the possibility of continuation. Temporary assignments cannot exceed 11 consecutive months without a full 31-day break from employment. Employees in temporary positions are not considered permanent state employees and do not earn leave. Temporary employees are subject to the Affordable Care Act guidelines.
