Job Description:

Responsibilities

Health Research, Inc. is seeking an Hourly Project Assistant II to work within the Division of Epidemiology, New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). This position will review Vibriosis cases reported in 2025 to improve data quality, timelines, and completeness, and assist to analyze incidence, trends, and risk factors of 2018-2024 Vibriosis cases from the New York's Metropolitan Area counties.

Vibrio are bacteria that naturally live in coastal waters. They are found in higher numbers in May through October, when water temperatures are warmer. Human Vibriosis infections have increased worldwide due to high bacterial spread in coastal areas amid climate change. Vibrio causes foodborne illnesses and life-threatening wound infections and is a public health concern in the New York States' Metropolitan Area. The incumbent will join a multi-program and collaborative environment and will experience how the NYSDOH conducts surveillance and control of Vibrio cases, performs epidemiological analysis, and provides insight in mitigation strategies. Duties include and are not limited to assisting with the monitoring of Vibriosis surveillance data quality, assisting with conducting case interviews using standardized NYSDOH form, assisting to ensure timely specimen submission to NYSDOH's public health laboratory Wadsworth Center, and assisting with Vibrio outbreak investigations and response. The incumbent will also assist with analyzing and reporting disease incidence and trends and will also communicate findings to the NYSDOH and public health partners.

This position is part of the Pathways to Public Health Internship Program. It is made available through funding from the Center for Disease Control's Public Health Infrastructure Grant to expand opportunities to strengthen career pathways to public health by bringing together students of all disciplines and academic levels with public health professionals to create a space of exploration, learning, and development.

Minimum Qualifications
Currently enrolled in a relevant training program or pursuing a related degree or certificate in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with Microsoft Office. Knowledge of data analysis using Excel and or SAS. Experience with public health and communicable disease investigations.

Conditions of Employment

Hourly, grant funded position expected until approximately 11/28/2025. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Travel, 10% of the time, will be required.

The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire. Telecommuting will not be available.
