Our teams of modelers, planners, and engineers collaborate to help clients address the challenges posed by the convergence of aging infrastructure with the forces of climate change, regulations, and densification.

We are excited to welcome a new Senior Planning Engineer to guide these teams, lead technical analyses, and engage with client decision makers through our Wet Weather practice. In this role, you will use your experience in hydraulic modeling, planning and decision support, and technical communication to advance the Wet Weather practice's projects, programs, and strategy. You will mentor junior staff on both hard and soft skills, deliver project work, and serve as a technical lead and project manager on key pursuits. You will collaborate with BC's Wet Weather, Water Resources, and Infrastructure practices as a technical leader for planning and design projects.

Detailed Description:

Our ideal candidate is located anywhere in the Puget Sound area and is capable of serving as project manager and/or technical planning lead on a variety of planning and design focused projects. You will work closely with project and program managers, technical experts, and rising professionals to advance projects and deliver solutions for our public sector client base. Typical projects and responsibilities include:



  • Serve as Technical Planning Lead on a variety of studies and planning projects. Be a direct line for the Project Manager into all aspects of technical analysis. Guide technical strategy across diverse analyses to ensure conformity of assumptions and support of overall project goals. Guide project outcomes from the technical analysis perspective. Understand and communicate all technical analyses to non-technical project and client staff using various engagement tools (presentations, briefing materials, graphics, technical reports and memos).
  • Lead wet weather planning projects as a Project Manager. Serve as PM for individual studies and analyses to create efficient and streamlined teams by being both the PM and the Technical Planning Lead.
  • Support alternatives analysis as a technical lead. Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, project leadership, and client teams to guide alternative definition towards project goals. Engage deeply with the key project success criteria to inform the technical approach of alternatives development. Drive alternative selection through project team and client collaboration.
  • Develop hydrologic and hydraulic models. Set project modeling approach, guide modeling plans, perform quality control, troubleshoot day to day technical issues, and interpret results to engage clients on modeling activities. Guide modeling staff to achieve desired outcomes of each modeling effort.
  • Direct the work of junior engineers and scientists, coordinate with other engineering disciplines and subcontractors to meet, or exceed the project success metrics and client expectations.
  • Support infrastructure delivery program management as a technical resource.
  • Prepare reports, planning documents, and cost estimates for various multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Participate in business development activities and support the preparation of proposals and engineering fees for solicited work from various clients. Support the growth of the Water Resources, Wet Weather, and Infrastructure practices in this role.
  • Engage with BC's Master Planning and Modeling practice and Wet Weather practice to build a network of peers to support local project work.


Minimum Qualifications



  • B.S. degree in Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Washington State, or the ability to obtain through reciprocity within 6 months.
  • Specialist-level (10+ years of experience) knowledge in modeling and planning.
  • Specialist-level technical understanding of combined sewer, sanitary sewer, and stormwater collection system function and regulatory frameworks.
  • Specialist-level experience in hydrologic and hydraulic model development, calibration, and analysis in platforms such as PCSWMM, InfoSWMM, Mike+.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License required or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to conduct effective presentations and prepare written reports and documents.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Proposal writing experience.


Preferred Qualifications



  • M.S. degree in Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 15+ years of related modeling and planning experience.
  • Practitioner-level (5+ years of experience) knowledge of wastewater treatment plant hydraulic capacity and operation (as it relates to overall collection system capacity).
  • Competitive pursuit interview experience
  • Experience in integrated/multi-criteria planning efforts.


Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A: $145,000 - $199,000

Location B: $160,000 - $219,000

Location C: $174,000 - $238,000
