Job Description Overview: Academic Success Center Term Faculty (includes Instructional Coordinator responsibilities) Full-time, 9-month academic position (100% time appointment) (Summer augmentation may be possible) Position CIP Code: 37.01 Personal Awareness and Self-Improvement Reports to: Academic Success Center Manager (formerly Academic Writing and Learning Center) Salary: $45,000-$52,000
The Academic Success Center at the University of Minnesota Duluth is a newly merged department beginning summer 2025. The new center combines the Academic Writing and Learning Center [including the campus's first-year experience course (UST 1000 Learning in Community), Student Success Program (SSP) courses, the Tutoring Center, and the Writers' Workshop (the campus-wide writing center)], the University Honors program, the National Student Exchange program, and undergraduate research. The University relies on the center to provide a variety of curricular and co-curricular educational experiences to meet the needs of undergraduate students and align with the institution's self-development oriented campus learning outcomes: "demonstrate self-knowledge across a range of developmental areas" and "apply life skills to succeed in college and beyond."
Responsibilities:
- Instructional Coordinator for Campus-Wide Academic Success Courses - 50%
- Serve as the instructional coordinator for campus-wide academic success courses, including the institution's first-year seminar course, UST 1000 Learning in Community (examples of additional courses the position could develop and coordinate that do not yet exist include career development and undergraduate research writing)
- Develop and maintain/update course objectives, content, and instructional materials (e.g., lesson plans, handouts, in-class activities, videos) based on theory and evidence-based teaching and learning methodologies as well as new technologies as appropriate
- Standardize curriculum and accessible materials for all class sections and instructors through the use of University technologies (e.g., Canvas, Kaltura, Simple Syllabus)
- Advise instructors who are teaching specialized versions of the course on curriculum development related to their additional subject matter (e.g., first-year seminar plus community engagement, first-year seminar plus student leadership)
- Develop and maintain/update instructor guides for individuals teaching the course
- Recruit and hire qualified instructors in compliance with institutional HR policies and procedures, including the institution's Faculty Qualifications policy
- Assign instructors and student peer leaders to class sections
- Train, coach, and mentor instructors and student peer leaders to deliver course content, use provided materials and technologies, create effective learning environments, assess student learning for graded class assignments, and comply with academic policies
- Observe instructors for performance reviews and recommend teaching skill improvements
- Establish and conduct systematic course assessments to inform ongoing course-level, standardized curriculum updates and pedagogical improvements; submit assessment reports to the campus's assessment office and participate in the campus assessment peer review process
- Conduct research to evaluate course content, instructional methods, technologies, and student success measures to inform recommendations for course improvements related to student success outcomes
- Conduct research to understand the institution's student population to inform various types of course changes, and adapt or create specialized courses or class sections as appropriate (e.g., transfer students, international students)
- Develop and conduct academic success workshops related to course content and outcomes for faculty and staff across the institution
- Promote the course to prospective students
- Instructor of Campus-Wide Academic Success Courses - 35%
- Teach academic success courses in the center, including but not limited to the first-year seminar (UST 1000 Learning in Community) and the seminar's peer leader practicum (SSP 3006 Peer Leader Practicum for UMD Seminar)
- Professional Consultant in the Writers' Workshop - 10%
- Serve as a primary consultant in the campus-wide writing center for multilingual students, faculty, and staff
- Member/Contributor to the Center's Operations and Activities - 5%
- Provide service to the center, as relevant (e.g., participate in department meetings; represent the center at campus events/activities; serve on committees)
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in teaching and learning, student development, or a related program from a regionally accredited institution
- Minimum of two years' teaching experience as an instructor of record in higher education
- Evidence of excellence in teaching in higher education (e.g., course evaluations, supervisor observations, etc.)
- Evidence of teaching or research in one or more topics related to student success
Preferred Qualifications:
- Education beyond a Master's Degree
- More than two years' teaching experience in higher education
- Experience teaching college-level student success courses
- Disseminated research in the scholarship of teaching and learning
- Experience developing new student success courses informed by educational research
- Experience managing or coordinating student success programs
- Experience collecting and/or analyzing data
- Experience conducting assessment, including using data to inform improvement
- Experience with teaching technologies (e.g., Canvas, Zoom, etc.), Microsoft Excel, and/or website design/maintenance
Pay and Benefits
Pay Range: $45,000-$52,000 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
