Position Summary
Knowledge - Professional
Knowledge of a variety of laboratory procedures and techniques applicable to the areas(s) of work. Knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and terminology. Knowledge of the basic pathophysiological processes being monitored and how medical laboratory science is applied.

Supervise and instruct students while performing point-of-care laboratory tests (urinalysis, kit tests, pregnancy test, etc.) during rotations at the A.H. Ray Wellness Center on campus once per week as scheduled.

Planning and Organizing Work
In coordination with staff members at the Community Care Center, the laboratory coordinator supervises and instructs students during phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures

Assist MLS instructors with preparing, facilitating, and instructing student laboratory sessions.

Laboratory/Subject Care
Perform safety training annually with incoming and current MLS students.

Laboratory Management:

Ability to monitor resources needed to operate the laboratory; ability to maintain inventory control; coordinate equipment and supplies; may require ability to monitor expenditures. Ability to understand and execute quality assurance program. Ability to ensure adherence to procedures and work standards; ability to maintain procedure manuals. Ability to monitor compliance with federal, state, and agency regulations.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Medical Laboratory Science Department at Winston-Salem State University is to provide students with the appropriate education and training to develop entry-level competencies in all routine areas of the clinical laboratory.

Medical laboratory science is a profession in which the theoretical knowledge of biology and chemistry is applied in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, maintenance of health, organ transplantation and forensic investigation through the use of clinical laboratory tests. Blood, tissue, and other body fluids can be analyzed and examined for foreign organisms and abnormalities. It requires the exercise of independent judgment, correlation of test results and interpretation of findings with respect to normal values. Graduates of this program are prepared for entry-level positions in clinical and research laboratories, hospitals, public health agencies, physicians' offices, institutions, pharmaceutical companies, industrial laboratories, and some marketing and consulting agencies.

Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor's degree in one of the following: medical technology, clinical laboratory science, medical laboratory science, chemistry, or biological science and one year of clinical laboratory experience. Must be a certified clinical/medical laboratory scientist or medical technologist. Preferred at least one year teaching experience.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
At least one year of experience in a clinical laboratory setting. Certified clinical laboratory technologist. Baccalaureate or master's degree preferred.
Required License or Certification
Nationally recognized certification for medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or medical laboratory science ( AMT, ASCP).
