The Upper Providence Environmental, Health and Safety Site Lead is responsible for leading the environment, health and safety program for the GSK Research & Development Upper Providence (UP) Site. The UP R&D site is the major R&D hub site for Pharma R&D. Current, full headcount at the site is approximately 3400 employees. This includes multiple laboratory buildings, pilot plant and facility support operations.

Please note: This position requires the candidate to work exclusively at our UP site during standard business hours (Monday through Friday) with occasional travel to additional sites.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead delivery for EHSS R&D programs and services in the Upper Providence R&D site

  • Direct site based EHSS staff to enable and support their development and to meet business needs.

  • Act as the Duty Holder for High Severity Risk programs to include Chemical, Biological, Radiation and Environmental

  • Oversee compliance with legal requirements effecting EHS program

  • Work effectively with the EHS professionals on the Pharma R&D team to deliver efficient and consistent programs to all groups within R&D

  • Provide leadership as active member of the site Upper Providence Council and through collaboration with the Principal Duty Holder to ensure EHS risk are known, assessed, and well managed

  • Provide day to day support as part of a team to deliver first line advice, training, emergency response, risk assessment, incident investigation, input to local projects and processes to the site

  • Act as the RDES (R&D Engineering Services) business partner to provide support to Capital and Site Minor Works projects, Change Controls, Impact Assessments and EHS Asset reviews

  • Ensure the interests of R&D are represented and protected, both within and external to GSK

  • Maintain comprehensive external and cross business awareness plus lead and participate in significant cross company initiatives

  • Provide Independent Business Monitoring Program leadership and support to R&D across the region and in conjunction with the broader R&D EHS team

  • Manage regulatory visits both announced and unannounced to the site

Accountability:

  • Accountable for alerting management to legislative development in the areas Health, Safety and Industrial Hygiene which could impact operations

  • Represent the interests of GSK in key external policy forums

  • Champion the interests of stakeholders within the business in GSK EHS policy and strategy development.

Complexity:

  • Shaping change in the external environment is a key job factor. Ability to manage complexity and uncertainty in rapidly changing situations is required. Autonomous decision making is often essential.

  • The breadth and number of activities directed by this position necessitates strong prioritization skills and the ability to manage tasks concurrently. Many of these tasks are initiated by the job holder; others come from internal customers and other stakeholders external to GSK. Deadlines are negotiable, but the job holder is required to make independent decisions as necessary.

  • Influencing and negotiation required to ensure appropriate resourcing and commitment from other divisional managers.

  • Position interfaces on a regular basis with all GSK business sectors.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Health and Safety Management or relevant scientific degree

  • 10+ years of experience in managing Environmental, Health and Safety Programs

  • People management experience across multiple sites within a matrix environment

  • Leadership experience to influence senior GSK managers and staff in a demanding and rapidly evolving legislative environment

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional) preferred

  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and persuasive skills for interacting with managers at all levels and managing complex internal relations across multiple sites internationally

  • Strong business acumen and networking abilities
