Guided by a passion for the power of storytelling in health care-our writer can translate complex information into content that feels clear, compassionate and human-centered.

As a vital member of our in-house marketing team, you'll work onsite at our Grand Rapids Campus, collaborating across departments to develop strategic, on-brand content that drives awareness and engagement. From web copy and patient stories to service line campaigns and fundraising materials, your words will help different audiences understand who we are-and why we matter.

This role is equal parts heart and hustle, requiring creativity, curiosity and a strong grasp of voice, tone and purpose across multiple formats and platforms.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Writing
    • Write, edit and proofread content for all internal and external facing Mary Free Bed branded materials across the hospital, our system of hospitals (JOAs and partnerships), Foundation and Guild
    • Serve as copywriter and proofreader for digital and print collateral, including internal and external facing projects Including annual report, corporate overview, patient education materials, marketing brochures, programmatic materials, clinical publications, event communications/collateral, and newsletters
    • Write, edit and proofread online content for website, blogs and social media
    • Writes for all types of audiences including patients (adults and pediatric), caregivers, community members, public, clinical and philanthropic
    • Serve as writer for the system to ensure consistency of information, voice and style in written communications and materials.
    • Develop Mary Free Bed patient stories for multiple audiences and mediums through interviews with patients, families and clinical professionals. Must be comfortable arranging and leading interviews.
    • Align projects with editorial calendar in collaboration with other marketing team members.
    • Collaborate with public relations team to proofread and edit press releases, executive talking points and speeches as needed
    • Help coordinate photo/video shoots to accompany written material.
  • Support special events and projects

Customer Service Responsibilities

Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages, coaches, and monitors the same in team members. This individual should consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers and deal discretely and sensitively with confidential information.

Responsibilities in Quality Improvement

Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions. Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.

Essential Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, creative writing or technical writing,
  • At least five years of experience as a lead writer within an organization or agency
  • Expert level APA style proofreader
  • A strong portfolio showcasing your independent writing skills in print, digital, web and social media projects.
  • Highly skilled in information design; strong ability to interpret and simplify complex topics for patient audiences
  • Expert in Word, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat
  • Ability to use generative AI (ChatGPT) to enhance workflow without compromising the quality of work
  • Familiar with Adobe CC (InDesign), Canva
  • Ability to adapt to technology, work seamlessly in project management software and track time
  • Previous health care experience a plus
  • General knowledge of rehabilitation service and principles of marketing and sales
  • Ability to write technical/medical information for professionals
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in conjunction with a team of professionals
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple assignments simultaneously
  • Ability to write quickly, identify discrepancies across projects and manage high-volume workflow
  • Ability to complete complex writing tasks with ease in a bustling environment - this role serves onsite in an open floor plan, alongside a team of highly collaborative content creators.
  • Strong listener who approaches every project with joy, curiosity and compassion.

Preferred Job Qualifications

Experience in UX and information design, marketing, public relations. Basic understanding of graphic design and photography.

Compensation based on experience, starting from $32.05.
