The Clinical Nurse Educator provides support to the teams implementing and reporting on these programs. The main initiatives for the Clinical Educator will be to provide education to the staff and providers, conducting chart reviews, and ensuring accurate clinical documentation across the organization.

A Minimum of 2-year experience as a Clinical Documentation Specialist. Minimum of 5 years of recent acute care experience as a RN.

Current CCDS certification through ACDIS required

Summary:

The Clinical Documentation Educator is a professional Registered Nurse with a broad clinical knowledge base and understanding of DRG documentation requirements who works under the supervision of the Clinical Documentation Manager and Director.

The Clinical Documentation Specialist Educator analyzes data from multiple sources to identify trends and opportunities for quality improvement, completeness, and accuracy of medical record documentation for the Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) program.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: second-level chart reviews, assist with resolution of DRG discrepancies between CDS and coding team, coordinating provider education, providing regular education to CDI team, providers and other members of the treatment team (such as case managers, coding team, PT, OT, SLP, RT, dieticians and etc.), collaborate with the DRG Coordinators to review denials and SMART changes. Coordinates new hire training, post orientation audits.

The educator develops and provides education curriculum and resources utilizing varying education modalities based on staffing and program needs.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Education:Graduation from accredited School of Nursing; BSN or bachelor's degree in health-related field preferred.
  • License/Certifications:Current License to practice professional nursing in the State of Maine. Current CCDS certification through ACDIS
  • Experience:Minimum of 2-year experience as a Clinical Documentation Specialist. Minimum of 5 years of recent acute care experience as a RN.Knowledge of desktop applications, including CDI software and Microsoft Office. Knowledge of ICD - 10-CM.Knowledge of federal, state, and private payer IPPS regulations. Strong written and verbal communication skills required. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks. Excellent time management and critical thinking skills. Independent worker, self-motivated with the ability to adapt to the rapidly evolving field. Working knowledge of hospital inpatient quality improvement program and practices.
