MongoDB's mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere-on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 new developers signing up to use MongoDB every month, it's no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.

MongoDB Atlas is our developer data platform that accounts for 65% of the company's revenue. It allows users to deploy fault-tolerant, secure, globally distributed MongoDB clusters in just minutes, as well as set up APIs, deploy applications, visualize data and more.

The Role

We are seeking a Lead Engineer to guide the technical direction and support the growth of the Atlas Growth Platforms team at MongoDB. This team builds and maintains the infrastructure behind experimentation, service configuration, and partner integrations that shape key moments in the Atlas user journey and drive measurable impact across our growth funnel.

As a Lead Engineer, you'll be responsible for ensuring your team delivers high-quality, scalable backend services and intuitive frontend experiences that empower teams across MongoDB to experiment rapidly and make informed decisions. You will own both the success of the systems your team builds and the people you lead - striking the balance between project delivery, mentoring, long-term architectural investment, and individual career development.

We are looking to speak to candidates who are based in New York City for our hybrid working model.

Responsibilities

  • Support the career growth of your direct reports through coaching, feedback, and opportunity creation. Model MongoDB's core values & leadership principles while fostering psychological safety, inclusive culture, and accountability
  • Lead the delivery of high-impact infrastructure for experimentation, configuration, and 3rd-party integrations. Set realistic and ambitious goals for your team while helping proactively manage scope, dependencies, and risks
  • Provide technical design reviews and balance hands-on contributions to complex systems involving A/B testing, data pipelines, feature flags, and partner integrations
  • Partner closely with Product, Analytics, Engineering teams, and other stakeholders to help define and drive a roadmap aligned with business outcomes
  • Ensure observability, scalability, and maintainability of your team's systems. Lead retrospectives, support incident response, and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement. Support the team's 24/7 on-call rotation by being in the escalation path
  • Represent your team's needs and priorities in organization-wide discussions. Foster strong partnerships across engineering, product, and GTM functions
  • Hire, onboard, and retain exceptional engineers. Assess team capacity regularly and ensure knowledge sharing and load balancing across the team

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience and 3+ years of engineering management or team leadership of >3 engineers
  • Expertise in building backend systems in compiled languages (Java, Go, C#) and fluency with frontend technologies (React/TypeScript preferred)
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, data pipelines, and service-oriented architecture
  • Track record of delivering complex projects with cross-functional impact
  • Proven ability to mentor and grow engineers while holding a high bar for quality and collaboration

Preferred Skills

  • Experience running or building frameworks for large-scale A/B testing
  • Familiarity with analytics platforms (e.g. Segment, Amplitude) and data-driven product development
  • Proficiency with Kubernetes and cloud-native infrastructure
  • Prior work on partner or platform integrations, such as embedding services in cloud provider marketplaces (e.g. Azure, GCP, AWS)
  • Strong product intuition and a passion for experimentation infrastructure

Success Measures

You'll know you're successful in this role if within:

  • 3 months: You've earned your team's trust, started guiding and learning from engineers, and delivered an initial enhancement or fix to our experimentation, configuration, and/or partner integrations systems. You are leading team syncs and retrospectives
  • 6 months: You're leading strategic planning and designing quarterly plans, while unblocking your team on technical and execution challenges. You are leading performance and growth conversations with your reports
  • 12+ months: You've grown the impact of the team through great hires, informed delegation, and improved engineering practices, while influencing broader direction through your cross-functional partnerships and technical leadership
