Position Summary
The Office of Teaching Innovation and Digital Education (OTIDE) invites applications for an Instructional Consultant with the UA Teaching Academy. Appointments to the faculty of The University of Alabama are based on the personnel requirements of the University's academic programs and on the goal of achieving and maintaining excellence in its teaching, research, and service/academic citizenship activities.
Detailed Position Information
The Instructional Consultant, UA Teaching Academy supports the institution's strategic goal of providing a premier education characterized by outstanding teaching. The Instructional Consultant will collaborate with faculty to assess their teaching needs and provide individualized instructional support and guidance. They will attend class sessions to observe teaching, will provide teaching assessments to faculty using rubrics and narrative feedback, and will offer workshops to stay current with educational research and trends. Consultants will work closely with Teaching Academy leadership to create and lead initiatives to enhance teaching effectiveness. Lastly, the Instructional Consultant may assist in grant writing and research-related initiatives supporting the scholarship of teaching and learning.
The Instructional Consultant should possess the following expertise:
1.) Knowledge of theory and research related to teaching and learning;
2.) Skills in designing and delivering faculty development workshops;
3.) Abilities in mentoring and coaching faculty members on pedagogy and instruction;
4.) Project management skills related to faculty development initiatives.
Further, successful candidates must demonstrate the ability to relate well with faculty and leaders within academic units. The Instructional Consultant holds a part-time appointment with OTIDE, allowing them to maintain a faculty appointment in their home academic college with appropriate adjustments to their workload.
Job Duties:
Consult with faculty: Collaborate with faculty members to improve instruction.
a) Mentoring and Coaching: Provide one-on-one mentoring and coaching to
faculty members seeking to enhance their teaching skills and pedagogical
knowledge.
b) Needs Assessment: Conduct individual and group consultations with faculty
members to assess their specific teaching needs, challenges, and goals.
c) Pedagogical Guidance: Provide expert guidance and recommendations to
faculty on pedagogical strategies, teaching methodologies, and instructional
design principles.
d) Cultural Competence: Foster an inclusive and culturally sensitive environment
by helping faculty address diversity and inclusion in their teaching practices.
e) Technology Integration: Advise faculty on the effective integration of
educational technologies, digital resources, and learning management systems
(LMS) into their courses.
f) Assessment and Feedback: Support faculty in designing assessment
methods and rubrics to evaluate student learning and provide constructive
feedback.
g) Data Analysis: Analyze data related to student performance and course
evaluations to identify areas for improvement and inform evidence-based
teaching strategies.
h) Faculty Development Workshops: Plan, design, and deliver faculty
development workshops, seminars, and training sessions on various aspects of
effective teaching.
i) Learning Communities: Facilitate the formation of teaching and learning
communities where faculty can collaborate, share best practices, and engage
in peer mentoring.
j) Feedback Collection: Gather feedback from faculty on the effectiveness of
faculty development programs and use this feedback for continuous
improvement.
k) Research Collaboration: Collaborate with faculty on pedagogical research projects and initiatives, contributing to the scholarship of teaching and learning.
l) Grant Writing: Assist in seeking external funding opportunities and writing grant proposals to support faculty development initiatives. m) Consultation Records: Maintain records of consultation sessions, recommendations, and progress to track faculty development and institutional improvement.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be a current member of the University of Alabama faculty
Master's degree in any related field
Minimum of 5 years cumulative experience teaching at accredited institutions of higher education
Evidence of successful teaching at the collegiate level
Preferred Qualifications
Terminal degree in any related field Prior experience working with faculty engagement/development, event programming, and managing programs. Experience with building collaborative relationships across a broad environment.
