The Department of Food Science, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (
SEBS), Rutgers University, New Brunswick has a position for a Post-Doctoral Associate position (CY) to work in Dr. Tianming Yao's laboratory preferably starting from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027. The salary offered for this position will be commensurate with experience.
The successful candidate hired for this position will primarily support research on the gut microbiome and its impact on host health, focusing on (1) dietary fiber extraction, purification, and molecular structure determination, and (2) evaluating their nutritional functions in governing gut microbiota responses. This research aims to examine dietary fiber effects on gut microbiota, identify beneficial metabolites, and explore their role in addressing the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases. In addition, the candidate will contribute to developing innovative methods for valorizing agro-industrial by-products (e.g., apple pomace, cranberry pulp) into functional dietary fibers and assessing their structural properties and microbiome interactions using human stool samples and animal models. The role also includes graduate and undergraduate student supervision and manuscript preparation for publications. |

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
The position requires a Ph.D. in food science, nutritional science, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related discipline, along with experience in polysaccharide extraction, structural analysis, and microbial cultivation. Experience with anaerobic microbiology and animal handling is a plus, though not required. Knowledge of bioinformatics is highly advantageous, but not mandatory. |

Proficiency in graphing software and statistical analysis tools is expected. The applicant must have evidence of scholarly publications in scientific journals. |
Equipment Utilized |
Typical laboratory equipment for molecular biology and analytical chemistry experiments, such as the anaerobic chamber, GC,
HPLC, and
PCR. Also use word processing, data processing software, and graphic/statistical tools. |
Physical Demands and Work Environment |
The candidate should be able to lift 20 lbs. and will be working with stool biospecimens and mice models. |
