The New Hanover County Health Department is seeking a part-time Dental Assistant (32 hours/week) for a benefits-eligible position to assist a dentist with the provision of dental care and education to children throughout New Hanover and Brunswick County Schools, on a mobile dental unit.
Duties include:
- Polishing teeth.
- Applying sealants.
- Taking bitewing and panoramic x-rays.
- Reinforcing dentist's instructions to children and families.
- Providing basic oral hygiene education.
- Explaining treatment plans.
- Four-handed dental assisting during restorative appointments to include restorations, stainless steel crowns, space maintainers and extractions.
- Coordination of schedules
- Sharing administrative roles including, but not limited to, answering phone, scheduling and confirming appointments, registering patients in electronic medical record; check-in/check-out, verifying benefits, maintaining inventory and supplies.
- Daily and weekly cleaning on the mobile dental unit.
- Emergency shelter duty roles, when applicable.

Hours:
8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Monday through Thursday.
Must be available to work during emergency situations.
Salary Information:
This is a part-time, 32 hour/week position, with the hiring range beginning at $17.9880/hour. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations. This is a non-County funded position and is subject to the availability of funding and/or the needs of the department.
Sign On Bonus:
Candidates accepting employment into this position are eligible to receive a one-time sign on bonus of $2,000 with half being paid upon starting in the position and half being paid upon successful completion of one's introductory period. Current NHC employees hired to fill one of these positions will receive half of the sign on bonus amount ($1,000) upon starting in the position and the second installment of $1,000 will be paid following 180 days of successful employment in the position. In the event the employee voluntarily resigns from the position before one year of service in it, the employee shall repay the sign on bonus amount on a prorated basis, depending on the length of full time service in the position prior to resignation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Some college courses and training from an American Dental Association-accredited dental assisting program and one (1) year dental assistant experience that includes working with children; or two years on-the-job training as a dental assistant that includes working with children; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

- Radiography for Dental Assistants
- Coronal Teeth Polishing
- OSHA Sterilization and Infection Control
