The Division of Public Safety (DPS) is a team of public safety professionals that work collaboratively with our community to keep Cornell a safe and secure campus to learn and live on. DPS is comprised of the Public Safety 911 Communications Center, Cornell University Police Department, Emergency Management, Clery Compliance, the Access Control Program, Community Response Team, and the Public Safety Ambassador Team.

The Access Control Program (ACP), a unit within the Division of Public Safety, oversees and administers the card access, video surveillance, intrusion, and key management security systems for Cornell University's campuses in Ithaca and Geneva, NY, some New York City locations, and in Rome, Italy.

What Will You Do

The Access Control Systems Administrator is responsible for managing complex network systems that handle communication between a wide array of physical and virtualized servers, IP Cameras, facility controllers, and other internet-of-things devices.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Design, implement, and maintain enterprise storage solutions (e.g., SAN, NAS, distributed storage) in support of virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, and OpenStack.
  • Architect and deploy scalable server infrastructures to ensure high availability, optimal performance, and system redundancy using virtualization technologies.
  • Serve as primary technical support for critical system issues, responding to network outages and emergencies on a rotating 24/7 basis.
  • Develop and enforce standard operating procedures, security protocols, and disaster recovery plans to ensure operational reliability and business continuity.
  • Monitor the overall health and performance of IT infrastructure, proactively identifying and addressing potential issues.
  • Maintain and patch all physical and virtual devices across networks to ensure system stability and security compliance.
  • Oversee the security of connected devices and networks, with a focus on data protection and risk mitigation.
  • Collaborate with security vendors on the integration of proprietary software and hardware systems.
  • Design and implement effective technical solutions aligned with organizational needs.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts in clear, accessible language tailored to diverse user audiences.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Information Technologies, with 3 to 5 years of providing system and/or network administration in a production environment or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of virtualization concepts and tools, MS Hyper-V or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of systems and networking software, hardware, and networking protocols.
  • Experience with scripting and automation tools for both Windows and Linux environments. Proven track record of developing and implementing IT strategy and plans.
  • Resourcefulness and diagnostic/problem-solving aptitude; displaying and executing logical and complex troubleshooting methods.
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively interface with technical and non-technical staff at all organizational levels.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently, and take initiative. Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have and maintain a valid NYS driver's license.
  • Must have the ability to work on call (24/7 rotation with other team members).
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current access control administration background checks--state and federal (administered through the FBI and DOD).
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications for the position include:

  • System administration and IT certifications in Linux, Microsoft, or other network related fields are a plus.
  • Knowledge of virtualization concepts and experience with Hyper-V ESXi preferred.
  • Experience with network monitoring tools.
  • Experience with relational DBMS' such as Oracle, MS SQL, etc.
  • Cyber Security certifications such as ISC^3 or GIAC based qualifications.
  • Foundation level familiarity with IT Service Management (ITSM) concepts
