Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned Master's degree in anatomy, physiology, biology, kinesiology, exercise science or a related discipline, or medical degree. Candidates whose degree is in a related discipline must demonstrate academic experience and credentials to teach anatomy and physiology at the undergraduate level.
  • Evidence of or potential for effective teaching at the undergraduate level.
  • Evidence of potential for professional service to the University and/or to the public.

Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)

  • Evidence of human cadaver dissection, or related dissection experience
  • Evidence of student mentorship
  • Evidence of teaching anatomy and physiology within higher education
  • Evidence of course design at the undergraduate and/or graduate level
  • Evidence of service to the university, community and/or professional organization.
  • Additional or advanced experience in health sciences, biology, health sciences, biology, medicine or related field is desired

Description of the Department or Unit
The newly created Department of Kinesiology (effective July 2025; formerly the Department of Public Health & Exercise Science) at Appalachian State University comprises nationally accredited and recognized programs including a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in Kinesiology (formerly Exercise Science). The Kinesiology graduate program at App State has a long history of success and prestige in strength & conditioning and clinical exercise physiology. The department features state of the art laboratories and supports faculty with diverse research and practice backgrounds. This inaugural chair position is a significant milestone in the history of Exercise Science (Kinesiology) at App State as it marks the transition into an independent , stand-alone department.
Appalachian State University's Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) is transforming the health and quality of lives of individuals, families, and communities through inclusive practices, interprofessional collaboration, and innovation in teaching, scholarship, service, and clinical outreach. The BCHS supports over 3,400 students in nine undergraduate and nine graduate degree programs, organized into six academic departments. The programs are located in Boone in the Holmes Convocation Center and the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, the cornerstone of Boone's Wellness District. We also have a presence on our new campus in Hickory. The college supports the Appalachian Institute for Health and Wellness and has a collaborative partnership with the Wake Forest School of Medicine's Physician Assistant Program and multiple health and human service agencies across the region. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching undergraduate core courses in the Department of Kinesiology (effective July 2025; formerly the Department of Public Health & Exercise Science), with a primary role teaching in person anatomy and physiology laboratory classes. Responsibilities include undergraduate anatomy and physiology laboratory preparation and working with human cadavers. Other undergraduate teaching may include introduction to kinesiology (formerly exercise science), anatomy and physiology lectures. Participating in service activities for the department, university, community and professional organizations.

Suggested Salary Range Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
