Summary

Performs case abstraction and data management for all reportable cancer cases and enters into the cancer registry data base. Conducts research and case finding procedures using quantitative and qualitative data to identify all reportable cancer cases. Interprets and analyzes complex information abstracted from patients' charts.

Job Duties

  • Conducts retrospective, prospective, and concurrent medical record reviews to assess diagnosis, treatment, and disease status for cancer patients.
  • Performs complex processes of abstracting, case-finding, follow-up maintenance, and research of all cancer cases reported.
  • Reads and interprets medical information of cancer patients and codes the topography and morphology of cancer cases.
  • Performs research and prepares statistical reports by retrieving and releasing information according to cancer registry standards.
  • Conducts and provides timely responses to questions on patient follow-up from internal and external inquiries related to patients' cancer treatment.
  • Produces complete and accurate cancer registry data abstractions following all required coding and data abstraction manuals.
  • Identifies opportunities for departmental and organizational process and quality improvements initiatives.
  • Maintains positive communication with physicians and others regarding cancer staging and all other aspects of the cancer registry.
  • Assists with statistical analysis of data and responds to data requests.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree Anatomy and Physiology Levels I-II; Medical Terminology course
  • 2 years experience in a hospital-based tumor registry and
  • Ability to perform case ascertainment of cancer cases.
  • Ability to use other software programs relating to database management and statistical outcomes.
  • Ability to analyze and abstract pertinent information from the medical record.
  • Knowledge of cancer treatment options for all primary cancer sites.
  • Knowledge of tumor registry theory and operations.
  • Proficency of medical terminologies.
  • CTR - Certified Tumor Registrar - State of Pennsylvania Upon Hire

Physical Demands

Lift and carry 25 lbs. frequent sitting/standing, frequent keyboard use, *patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
