Overview

The Occupational Therapist shall plan and administer evaluation and treatment programs in alignment with State of Iowa Practice Standards. The Occupational Therapist shall develop a plan and work towards clinical development projects/goals that aligns with organizational priorities and goals. The Occupational Therapist will provide group intervention to patients on inpatient behavioral health units.

Responsibilities

Direct/Indirect Patient Care

* Patient evaluation and treatment
o Provides group services to all behavioral health inpatient units
o Integrates the five elements of patient management - examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, and intervention in a manner designed to optimize outcomes.
o Involves the patient and or family in treatment planning and goal development; updates patient/family regularly on progress or therapy plan changes.
o Explains or clarifies to patient and family the nature of a particular condition, disease or injury as it relates to occupational therapy scope of practice.
o Provides pertinent information to other health care providers. Openly shares clinical recommendations in manner others understand. Integrates relevant information from other healthcare providers into treatment plan.
o Uses QI tools (including but not limited to functional outcome measures) to monitor and improve clinical care and patient outcomes.
o Coordinates goals with overall treatment plan for patient.
o Utilizes evidenced-based treatment.
o Oversees patient plan of care and provides supervision to COTA as needed following state guidelines.

* Completes documentation and billing in accordance with applicable regulatory standards in a timely and efficient manner

Teaching and Learning

* Assesses one's own strengths and weaknesses and seeks training/education as needed to maintain currency in occupational therapy theory, practice, technology, and ethics.

* Meets state licensure requirements related to continuing education, active in personal professional growth and development.

* Responsible for completing facility assigned education in a timely manner.

* Appropriately delegates tasks to COTA and support personnel, supervises and actively seeks mentorship for COTA in new treatment areas.

* Meets all competency measures established for this position.

* Adheres to AOTA code of ethics.

* Responsible for staying up to date with hospital policy/processes as well as department policy/process

* Participates in staff meetings and/or responsible to understand and integrate information.

* Actively participates in interdepartmental and interdisciplinary meetings and committees as appropriate.

* Oversees Occupational Therapy students as assigned. According to licensure laws, is professionally accountable for overseeing delegated clinical skills of the COTA and/or student.

* Accepts responsibility for maintaining and developing personal and professional skills and knowledge related to the work area assigned.

Organizational Contribution

* Leads clinical development team projects that are aligned with organizational priorities and goals; significant personal contribution to clinical project(s) annually.

* Develops and leads clinical programs that are aligned with organizational priorities and goals as assigned by supervisor/manager.

* Supports the development of others through activities such as mentoring, develop/ present clinical in-services, news/article development or written materials. This may include education to team members outside of department.

* Develops and participates in community education and activities sponsored by UPH.

* Identifies, leads, and/or develops evidence-based treatment methods and plans for implementation within their discipline and across appropriate therapy sites and/or disciplines.

* Proactively supports team as clinical resource for direct patient care and quality documentation.

* Involved in identification, creation, and implementation of clinical workflows and respective documentation templates.

* Leadership roles with team or workgroup.

* Role models ability to problem solve and offers multiple solutions to consider.

* Effective in peer leadership and ability to effectively teach others; seeks feedback and integrates to improve self.

Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy Program Required.

Experience: Preferred One or more years of experience in a comparable role.

License(s)/Certification(s): Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. Valid Iowa Occupational Therapist License. NBCOT Certification. CPR Certification. Preferred Certification in specialty area or completion of continuing education relevant to specialty area.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Exceptional oral and written communication. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work in an efficient manner. Ability to maintain composure under stressful working conditions. Advanced computer use and application (intranet, word, excel, keyboarding, sharepoint, email, etc.) Exemplifies respectful and open team member communication. Preferred Experience with computerized documentation systems.
