Summary
Provides basic engineering and technical services, e.g. testing and repair of medical technology or IT systems in clinical and research areas including requirements gathering, documentation, testing, implementation and support of medical technology and clinical IT systems. Assists in quality improvement activities, suggests innovative solutions to technical problems.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Note: The term medical equipment may be either or all of electronic, mechanical and computer-based technologies for use in clinical or research applications. Under guidance of a senior clinical engineer, project specialist or department leadership:
- May function as a team or technical project leader. May, in cooperation with the team leaders, direct the work of analysts and techs.
- Assist in capital equipment purchases and preparation of budgets. Work with clinical or research departments to coordinate the procurement of new devices including evaluation, selection, acquisition, user training, and installation.
- Develop protocols and procedures for the use, maintenance, and testing of equipment and systems.
- Assist with data analysis and in developing dashboards for the specified goal.
- Participate in educational programs for clinical and technical staff including to level of engineering theory.
- Assist in investigation of clinical incidents involving medical devices and, under guidance of senior engineer, prepare and file appropriate reports, disseminate information regarding possible hazards and implement corrective action.
- Communicate to manufacturers about problems with Biomedical systems and medical devices; ensure appropriate response.
- Evaluate safety and efficacy of medical devices. Investigate cost-effectiveness of alternatives to current technologies.
- Maintain knowledge of and advise hospital personnel of codes and regulations regarding clinical devices, patient data and billing and compliance.
- Perform technical consultation in clinical areas.
- Assist in design and data collection and collation for product evaluations and trials.
- Participate in department committees and working groups as required.
- Perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to manage engineering projects and/or personnel
- Ability to diagnose and solve technical and/or system problems of moderate complexity
- Knowledge of electronic, mechanical and/or computer engineering design and applications principles
- High level of computer literacy to the level of at least word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics, statistics, engineering tools and programming.
- Human relations and interpersonal skills of a level as necessary to manage an operational team in a complex environment under general direction; ability to interact with most hospital clinical personnel.
- Skill in technical writing
- Skill in technical presentation and teaching
- Leadership ability. Interpersonal, communications and high level of organizational skills
- Effective analytical skills to develop reports and analyze the results
- Ability to develop and implement actionable processes independently.

Experience
- Enrollment in an Biomedical Engineering or Clinical Engineering program towards a Bachelor's degree or Masters degree with a cooperative component.
- A combination of education and experience may be substituted for requirements.
