The Department of Physical Therapy, within the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University (
WSSU), currently has nine full-time faculty members and offers small class sizes of 30 students. Our program boasts one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation. The Doctor of Physical Therapy (
DPT) program follows a primarily face-to-face, 12-month curriculum. We seek candidates who will contribute to our dynamic, collaborative, and motivated physical therapy core faculty
We are currently accepting applications for
Three full-time, 12-month faculty positions in Physical Therapy, with opportunities for either tenure-track or clinical-track appointments at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Specifically, we invite candidates who have contemporary expertise or teaching experience in one or more of the following areas: orthopedic assessment and interventions, neuromuscular assessment and intervention (including adult or pediatric), and basic clinical and/or foundational sciences.
The successful candidates will contribute to graduate course instruction and development, provide guidance as faculty advisors, mentor students, and conduct scholarly research leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline and/or interprofessional field. The ideal candidates will also have a commitment to presenting at professional conferences, actively pursuing extramural funding in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, participating in departmental, school, and university service, as well as engage in service to the profession and the larger Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community.

We seek candidates who demonstrate excellence in teaching and interest in working collaboratively to enhance the strengths of our entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy curriculum and transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy program. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching physical therapy to students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. They should illustrate an ability to leverage various technologies that engage students in the learning process. We desire candidates who can show evidence of mentoring graduate students in research experiences or who have experience engaging students in study abroad or community service learning where they must leverage their content knowledge to benefit the larger community. We seek candidates who demonstrate the ability to participate in interdisciplinary teaching and research collaborations with professional colleagues at the university, across universities, or within the broader public. Candidates must also show a commitment to their professional growth and development and engage in inter/professional organizations and conferences.
- Must hold a degree in Physical Therapy. A DPT is required if the person does not have a terminal academic degree.
- Must be eligible for an unrestricted Physical Therapy License in the State of North Carolina.
- Minimum of three years of clinical practice
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

- Must possess academic doctorate (Ph.D, Ed.D, D.Sc., DHSc.) or candidates with "ABD" status will be considered.
- Board-Certified Specialist (ABPTS) in their area of expertise or who have a specialist certification, e.g. Manual therapy, vestibular rehabilitation, etc.
- Previous experience teaching in a DPT program.
- Demonstration and evidence of a commitment to innovation, and collaboration with colleagues.
- Has previous experience in teaching online and using Canvas or a similar Learning Management System.

The successful candidate will perform a variety of duties consistent with the expectations of
WSSU including the following:
Teaching and Advising
- Teach graduate courses in physical therapy via face-to-face, online, and hybrid approaches.
- Construct detailed course syllabi.
- Facilitate high-quality, engaging instruction to diverse students who learn in many ways.
- Leverage various technologies to communicate regularly with students, monitor student progress, and provide feedback on student success outcomes.
- Engage with students during mandatory office hours each week.
- Serve as an academic advisor and mentor to DPT students.
Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity
- Articulate a scholarship and/or research agenda appropriate for the academic discipline and/or interprofessional field.
- Execute the research agenda to align with the mission of the university and the academic unit.
- Present his/her original research and scholarship at local, state, national, and international inter/professional conferences and meetings.
- Produce scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline area, peer-reviewed journals that relate to the high-impact practices of community-engaged scholarship or interprofessional education and practice, or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of the discipline.
- Collaborate with faculty across the university and external to the institution and with professionals across the nation to form interdisciplinary teams that procure sponsored research.
- Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to evolve his/her professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions.
- Provide support that promotes continued accreditation of all programs within the department.
University, Professional, and Community Service and Engagement
- Consistently attend departmental and school meetings.
- Serve on departmental-level committees as assigned.
