JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Smeal College of Business (University Park) seeks an experienced professional to serve as the inaugural Executive Director of the Borrelli Institute for Real Estate Studies.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Smeal College of Business has a long-standing tradition of excellence in teaching and research in real estate, currently serving over 1,000 students per year across multiple degree programs. Smeal's flagship program in real estate is the undergraduate Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Real Estate, which was revamped in 2021 and is one of Smeal's fastest growing majors. Smeal also offers a highly popular undergraduate Certificate in Real Estate Analysis & Development. Growing student interest in real estate courses prompted the introduction of the Master's of Science (M.S.) in Real Estate Analysis and Development (MRE) degree in 2019 and an on-line graduate Certificate in Real Estate Law and Valuation in 2022. Rounding out the portfolio, Smeal also offers a highly regarded real estate concentration as part of the Ph.D. in Business Administration.

Established in 1985, the Borrelli Institute for Real Estate Studies is the catalyst for Smeal's success in real estate teaching and research and attracted a $5 million naming gift from Jason and Julie Borrelli in 2021. Collectively, the Smeal real estate program is supported by over $10 million in endowments and funds that allow the Borrelli Institute to offer programs such as its Real Estate Boot Camp that support student success via case study competitions, ARGUS training courses, career services and networking opportunities.

Smeal is now looking to build on the significant momentum behind real estate education at Penn State by appointing the Executive Director of the Borrelli Institute.

THE POSITION

The Executive Director will be associated with the real estate group in the Smeal College of Business Department of Risk Management as a non-tenure line clinical professor or professor of practice, based on the candidate's background. The Executive Director will report to the Director of the Borrelli Institute and will be expected to work closely with the Director and professional staff to develop and implement strategies and activities to help Penn State achieve its vision of being recognized as a top five real estate program. To that end, specific responsibilities of the position include:

  • Teaching: develop and offer real estate experiential learning instruction and opportunities in the Department of Risk Management at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Leadership of the Real Estate Boot Camp: develop, implement, and deliver co-curricular programing opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Student Recruitment and Placement: Develop and manage the Borrelli Institute career and intern placement program with goal of achieving 100% placement rate.
  • Outreach and Fundraising: Work with the Borrelli Institute Director and professional staff in expanding alumni engagement and fundraising activities.

LOCATION

The position is located at the University Park campus of the Pennsylvania State University.While hybrid work arrangements are possible, significant on-campus presence is expected.
