A DevOps Engineer on the Actuarial Software Engineering team will design and deliver CICD solutions that automate the build, test and deployment of applications and infrastructure. To excel in the role, you will combine knowledge of Gitlab-CI, AWS, Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker and OS targets with your strong problem-solving and creativity to build pipelines that enable our software engineers' to confidently release applications to varied platforms.

The Actuarial Software Engineering team at Northwestern Mutual is responsible for creating and improving systems that ensure the company can meet its financial obligations to its customers, employees, and field representatives. These systems are financial in nature, centered on risk products and benefit plans, and based on the professional knowledge of the actuary. The applications are varied, generally are mathematical, and involve working in close partnerships with technical peers and actuarial business experts.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

In this role you will collaborate on creative solutions with engineers, product managers and designers across several unique application domains. You will be expected to take initiative and work with minimal supervision to:

  • Design and implement Gitlab-CI pipeline solutions that automate builds, testing, continuous integration and monitoring of software applications and IT infrastructure.
  • Maintain pipelines to expected standards through engagement with the corporate DevOps community.
  • Track and learn new DevOps concepts and educate software engineers on their impacts and benefits.
  • Maintain documentation on DevOps design decisions.

Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of professional experience implementing Gitlab CICD pipelines.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent training and experience.
  • Proficient in at least one programming language (NodeJS (Typescript) preferred) and Git including branching strategies.
  • 1+ years of experience writing/debugging automation technology (Terraform, AWS CDK) within Amazon Web Services ("AWS").
  • Ability to extend pipelines to target multiple platforms (x86, Linux, z/OS) from a single code base.
  • Strong technical skills with a continuous growth mindset and the desire to learn.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills with multiple teams involved.
  • Strong sense of ownership and an ability to work through ambiguity.

Additional Skills a Plus:

  • Additional Desirable Programming Languages: C#, Java, Python
  • Knowledge of Testing and Site Reliability Domains: Test Pyramid, Monitoring Tools and Incident Management/Response
  • Knowledge of build systems for various languages and platforms: gradle, dotnet and cmake
  • Existing Certifications or willingness to obtain AWS Certified Developer/Architect

Pay Range - Start:

$68,320.00

Pay Range - End:

$126,880.00

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Please note that the salary range listed in the posting is the standard pay structure. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
