Sr Director, Clinical Quality & Outcomes

The Senior Director of Clinical Quality and Outcomes designs, implements and directs clinical quality planning, clinical quality management, and clinical quality improvement for Inova Health System. The Senior Director leads, supports, and drives activities that advance clinical excellence outcomes and initiatives to help the organization achieve the care mandate. The individual increases the enthusiasm for quality and performance of the quality team across all levels of the organization and collaborates effectively with Inova's service lines, sites of care, medical staff, nursing outcomes and professional practice teams, patient experience, patient safety, infection prevention, regulatory readiness, clinical analytics, continuous improvement teams, and other stakeholders. Quality professionals in ambulatory, acute care and service lines report to this position.

Job Responsibilities


  • Advises the health system on the selection of clinical excellence key performance indicator measures and targets using a combination of external landscape factors, gaps between the current state and our care mandate, insights from internal and external resources, existing and upcoming quality reporting/measurement/performance requirements, and critical rating/ranking/payment programs.
  • Develops and optimizes a proactive structure and method to provide sites of care and service lines with actionable insights that will drive clinical excellence outcomes; prioritizes quality resources in collaboration with sites of care and service lines and in alignment with discovered insights, system key performance indicator and other clinical excellence opportunities at the system, site, and service line levels; and, ensures quality plans are created and updated at the required intervals.
  • Oversees a standard approach to hospital, service line, and ambulatory quality committees.
  • Develops and optimizes a method and structure to provide proactive, intentional, and regular updates to the system, service line, and site of care stakeholders.
  • Ensures all required Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement meet expected standards; ensures regular gap analyses occur to key rating, ranking, and payment programs; develops and optimizes a method and structure to ensure alignment and coordination of efforts by the system, sites of care, and service lines to improve quality; and ensures team supports planned and unplanned regulatory surveys and visits in collaboration with the regulatory readiness team.
  • Ensures team is highly capable in improvement science; ensures a system is in place to differentiate common and special cause variation in analysis of processes and outcomes. Works with continuous improvement team and other stakeholders to increase organizational capability and capacity for improvement.

Minimum Requirements



  • Certification: Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) OR Lean/Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent (Must have one of the following upon hire)
  • 10 years of experience in healthcare quality
  • 5 years of supervisory or leadership experience, strongly preferred in healthcare quality
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field (or 4 years of experience in lieu of degree)


Preferred Qualifications



  • Master's degree
  • Track record of leading healthcare quality in a complex, heavily matrixed environment
