The Utilities Production section of the Energy and Sustainability department operates the University's combined cycle gas turbine plant on a 24-hour, 365 day per year basis. Production facilities include a combined heat and power facility which provides both the steam for heat and electricity for campus, and two chilled water production facilities. All the water for campus is provided by a university owned potable water filtration plant. Electricity from the local utility is fed through a university owned electric substation. Utilities is also responsible for all the distribution and collection systems located on campus including steam, chilled water, electricity, potable water, and wastewater.

This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the University's Water Filtration Plant, including responsibilities associated with water quality, production, laboratory analysis, equipment maintenance and distribution of potable water in a continuous supply to the entire campus. Uses knowledge of systems and application of sound judgment to safely respond to all operating scenarios, including emergencies. Responsible to operate all equipment in a safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant manner. Responsible for plant security.

This work may be performed on a shift basis, depending on the business needs of the University.

This position is covered by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) bargaining unit. This is a Grade 6 position with an hourly rate of pay of $34.03.

We require these qualifications:

  • Grade 6: Graduation from high school required, six months of equivalent experience in the operation of water treatment or purification equipment in a large purification plant. Possess and maintain a current NYS Grade IIA Filtration Plant Water System Operator required.
  • Demonstrated and documented proficiency in production equipment maintenance, water treatment plant operation, chemistry, microbiological and laboratory practices required.
  • Ability to understand and translate into action the specific directions and general goals of the plant manager to assure continued efficient system operation.
  • Ability to learn new technologies as new systems are introduced to the plant and to train other plant personnel in their use and maintenance.
  • Demonstrates the IPP divisional values. This includes such behaviors as the demonstrated ability to give and receive feedback, communicate honestly, listen, respect others, learn from mistakes, set high goals and achieve them, overcome obstacles, use time effectively, set priorities, and participate effectively on teams.
  • Is highly motivated and exhibits innovation, good judgment, and reliability in the workplace.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge of the skills necessary to perform maintenance activities. This includes use of such things as hand tools, wrenches, etc.
