At the New York Power Authority, you will be empowered to think big, do good, and transform the energy industry. We are a collaborative team of over 2,400 energy technologists, IT specialists, business experts, hydro engineers, and diverse professionals leading the energy revolution. With state-of-the-art technology, advanced research and development, a modernized infrastructure, and a focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG), we provide New Yorkers with low-cost, clean, reliable power - and we are well on the way to becoming the first end-to-end digital utility in the country.

NYPA's Research and Development (R&D) department is focused on the investigation of cutting-edge solutions that support the reduction of operational and maintenance costs while enhancing the efficiency, reliability, and safety of our generation and transmission assets as well as meet the energy goals of our customers and the state. Collaborating with internal stakeholders, external research organizations, and universities, R&D is engaged in the development, implementation, testing, and evaluation of new and innovative technologies, and plays a central role in investigating technologies aligned with NYPA's strategic goals. R&D administers contracts with major research organizations and solicits grants to support NYPA's research and development efforts, thereby minimizing investigative costs. R&D's focus is aligned with NYPA's VISION2030 including the preservation and enhancement of our hydropower assets, investigation of electrification and decarbonization, supporting development and operation of our transmission assets, partnering with our customers and the state to meet their energy goals and supporting the repurpose of the NYS Canal System for economic and recreational benefit.

The Intern will primarily focus on the following R&D efforts/projects during the Summer 2025 - assessment and deployment of energy storage technologies, drone automation technologies and grid enhancing technologies (GETs).
