Job Description

This is skilled journey level work combining activities in various mechanical and building trade areas; installation, operation, maintenance, equipment and fixtures, service and repair of electrical, refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, ventilating, and plumbing systems.

  • Work is distributed to take advantage of skills possessed for conformance to specifications and accepted standards of the trade, but is normally reviewed for overall results.
  • Titles falling under this category include: Electrician, Pipefitter, Refrigeration Mechanic, Electronics, Machinist, Sheet Metal, Welder and Controls (HVAC).
  • Characteristic Duties (Primary trade area is Electrical)
  • Plan, layout, install, and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.
  • Plan new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring, consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.
  • Prepare sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follow diagrams or blueprints, insuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings, and flooring.
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit, using such tools as hacksaw, pipe threader, and conduit bender.
  • Splice wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads with knife or pliers, twisting or soldering wires together, and applying tape or terminal caps.
  • Connect wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment using hand tools.
  • Install control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels, fastening in place with screws or bolts, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Connect power cables to equipment and install grounding leads.
  • Test continuity of circuit to insure electrical compatibility and safety of components, using testing instruments, such as ohmmeter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope
  • Observe functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement
  • May perform the following: preparation of cost estimates, material orders, reports and maintenance of records.
    • Due to necessary fluctuations of workloads in the skill area, an incumbent in this class may be required, on an occasional basis and according to need, to perform duties outside his/her trade area. Normal safety requirements, scheduling and the most efficient use of staff and equipment are taken into consideration in such assignments.
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • A job offer for this position is contingent on passing a physical examination to determine if the candidate possesses the physical capabilities necessary to perform the essential functions.
  • A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.
  • Five years of actual work experience and training, including the equivalent of apprenticeship or vocational training, in the trade.
  • Ability to read blueprints, plans, drawings, wiring diagrams, and electrical codes.
  • Skill in maintenance and use of tools, equipment and materials of applicable trade.
  • Ability on a daily basis to:
  • Grasp, lift, maneuver, rotate, and otherwise use small to large trades tools and equipment.
  • Grasp, lift, carry, and set down heavy objects (50-80 lbs.)
  • Grasp, turn, twist, pull, push, lift, and otherwise move equipment, controls, parts, etc.
  • Visually assess maintenance, construction and repair needs
  • Climb and work from ladders, stairs, and scaffolding
  • A valid driver's license may be required.
  • Depending on the nature of work performed, the incumbent may be required to wear a respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as outlined in the "Industrial Standard for Respirator Use".
Preferred Qualifications

  • Qualified as a journey level trades specialist in the electrician trade including the equivalent of apprenticeship or vocational training in the electrician trade
  • At least 4 years experience in a second mechanical trade area (Secondary skill area experience may run concurrently with primary skill area experience)
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $23.00-$30.00 hourly.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
