Associate Vice President of Analytics & Data Insight
American Public Education, Inc.

The Associate Vice President of Analytics and Data Insights is responsible for conducting analyses and leading/influencing key management discussions on strategic items impacting the business such as enrollment, retention, financial impacts of new regulations, and pricing decisions. This individual manages a team of analysts and specialists and is responsible for developing reports, analyzing data, and driving business insights and results in the areas of financial planning, enrollment, retention, academic outcomes and other areas as requested.

This incumbent will provide data driven insights and analyses to improve decision making in various areas of the business such as Finance, Academics, and Enrollment Management. This is a high visibility role in which individuals are required to actively engage and influence Senior Management, while playing a key role in identifying opportunities and taking proactive actions to improve the long-term prospects of the business. There is a high degree of cross-team collaboration. On a day-to-day basis, individuals in this role will engage directly with various departments as well as business and projects teams.

Responsibilities:



  • Performs economic analysis that incorporates cost factors and risk analysis into model and in turn models the impact of these factors on performance and profitability of the organization.
  • Creates consistent framework for reporting across all business units with clear understanding of definitions and measures.
  • Interacts, consults with and influences senior management at various levels of the organization, with various internal organizations (management, academics, operations, legal).
  • Acts as liaison between the business operations and available data, working on various initiatives to maintain visibility and understanding of the data and decisions being made.
  • Participates in leadership discussions including, but not limited to, the IT steering committee and other relevant business areas in order to provide data insight to operational decisions.
  • Initiates and leads continuous improvement of processes, systems, and training in Accounting & Finance related areas.
  • Oversees decision support team and monitors functionality of on-premises systems and cloud based technologies including Salesforce.com, SQL Server data infrastructures, and unstructured data sources.
  • Ensures timely and accurate development of data environments into reports, project management, and delivery to customers.
  • Collaborates with Data Governance, Data Acquisition & Architecture teams for ongoing development and support of data environments.
  • Collects, organizes and evaluates data to identify opportunities to reduce costs and improve performance.
  • Demonstrates staff planning and assessment skills, and strong leadership skills including consensus-building, conflict resolution, motivation and decision-making.
  • Responsible for coaching, employee development, and performance management for direct staff.
  • Operates in an environment where perfect data is not always available, and assumptions are required to estimate long-term financial projections.
  • Conducts reporting and planning process activities on directed areas. Analyzes results, business measures, and deviations against targets and plans and provides high quality reports and summaries in the reporting process.
  • Monitors monthly revenue drivers through reporting and ad-hoc analysis and identifies changes in the performance of the Company's top line, including trends analysis against the industry.
  • Assists in the preparation of management reporting for budget and financial results.
  • Responsible for performing special projects to improve process efficiency and to support expense management initiatives.
  • Presents findings, analyses, and recommendations to team and senior management.
  • Responsible for the preparation of new business plans and participates in business level management decisions regarding whether to execute on those plans.
  • Supports the annual financial budget, financial forecasts, analysis of actual results, financial reporting, and day-to-day ad hoc analysis through predictive analytics and report development.
  • Collaborates with senior leadership to prepare Board and executive presentations that tell conceptual story, bring clarity to results and identify actions necessary to stay on track.
  • Promotes identification of best practices and fosters cross functional sharing of initiatives, innovation and best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Reporting Relationships:

The AVP of Analytics and Data Insights reports to the SVP Growth, FP&A and Integration. This position has direct and indirect reports.

Requirements:



  • 10+ years data insights and analytics experience - experience in higher education highly desired.
  • Demonstrated experience in software development cycle to support Business Intelligence (BI) and Enterprise Warehouse solutions.
  • Understanding of data warehousing concepts including ETL, data modeling, BI, and analytics; moderate understanding of SQL architecture.
  • Minimum of 5 years proven managerial or supervisory experience.
  • Proven experience managing and delivering a wide variety of reporting and analytic solutions to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Solid planning, priority setting, and project management skills with experience managing multiple projects and resources concurrently.
  • Demonstrated management experience leading multiple cross functional teams.
  • Strong process improvement skills & initiative to always seek improvements.
  • Effective organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills alongside of creative thinking and innovative approaches within a strategic and broad perspective.
  • Broad conceptual judgment, initiative, and ability to deal with complex accounting issues.
  • Strong Command of subject matter.
  • Must possess theoretical thinking skills.
  • Experience with sensitive and confidential projects.
  • Experience working with clients/customers/students representing multiple stages of life and diverse backgrounds/experiences.
  • High degree of independence within agreed policies, targets, and budgets.
  • Bachelors degree required
