The main function of the Central Processor is to manage the workflow of all specimens arriving into central processing area of the laboratory. The primary objective of this position is to manage and triage samples for both in patients and out patients, identify potential errors and maximize patient /client satisfaction. Position involves preparing, processing, spinning, and aliquoting specific tests according to laboratory regulations. A Central Processor will receive specimens into the laboratory, review paperwork and perform clerical duties. Use of the Laboratory Information System is essential. Handles, processes and prepares all specimens being sent out to Reference laboratories. Functions as the major communication link with the nursing units, physicians and reference laboratories. Distributes the work to the technical areas of the laboratory. Must demonstrate exceptional client service telephone skills. Other duties may be assigned.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Performs computer data entry and retrieval tasks associated with the Hospital Information System (HIS).
    • 1.1 Identifies correct patient through physician provided information as indicated by feedback and supervisory observation.
  • 2. Determines and maintains specimen validity associated with initial stages of specimen processing.
    • 2.1 Assesses adequacy of specimen according to established procedures and policies as observed by Supervisor or from staff/Physician feedback.
  • 3. Performs LIS computer activities associated with the non-technical aspect of specimen processing.
    • 3.1 Organizes workload, minimizing delay in the initial stages of specimen processing thus maximizing the efficiency of the operation as indicated by feedback and as observed by supervisor.
  • 4. Practices universal precaution techniques as required.
    • 4.1 Wears precaution garments and gloves, where required, based on feedback and/or supervisory observation.
  • 5. Performs computer data retrieval tasks associated with patient information.
    • 5.1 Responds to telephone inquiries for laboratory results and verifies patient identification and appropriate test result inquiry in a timely manner as observed by supervisor.
  • 6. Responds to all incoming telephone calls to the laboratory.
    • 6.1 Maintains an open telephone line for clinical information or STAT requests as observed by feedback and/or supervisor.
  • 7. Performs manual computer backup procedure in the event of computer downtime.
    • 7.1 Initiates and maintains a computer downtime log according to established procedures for incoming specimens as observed by supervisor.
  • 8. Performs various ancillary tasks to maintain continuous smooth operation of Central Processing area.
    • 8.1 Regularly files Outpatient laboratory reports for courier delivery, according to established procedures as observed by Supervisor or staff feedback.
  • 9. Demonstrates proficiency in Send outs.
    • 9.1 Initiates the appropriate reference laboratory work lists.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

High school diploma or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

One (1) to two (2) years' experience in an accredited Clinical Laboratory preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Ability to work independantly in a fast paced environment. Knowledge of laboratory and diagnostic terminology is helpful. Good telephone/communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated attention to detail.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
