Primary Purpose of the Position
The Department of Mathematics at Winston Salem State University has a dynamic group of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to learning, teaching, and advancing mathematics. The Department of Mathematics at WSSU currently houses 11 full-time faculty and offers a BS Mathematics degree, a Concentration in Statistics, and a Minor in Mathematics. Faculty are committed to innovative and high-quality instruction that meets the needs of the student population. The department is committed to the mentorship of students in all facets of professional development and applies this same commitment to junior faculty members. WSSU's program blends interrelated but distinctive aspects of mathematics: theoretical ideas and methods, modeling real-world situations, the statistical analysis of data, and scientific computing. The curriculum is designed to develop competence in each of these aspects of mathematics in a way that responds to the interests and needs of individual students as well as link them to the 21st century world they will face after graduation.

Winston-Salem State University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Mathematics in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education with a start date of August 2025. Exceptional candidates may be eligible for appointment as the Vivian Chambers Distinguished Professors in Mathematics. Job responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, serving as a faculty advisor, mentoring and coaching students inside and outside the classroom; producing scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the mathematics discipline or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of mathematics; facilitating presentations at well-respected professional conferences; engaging in the procurement of extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams; participating in departmental, college, and university service as well as engaging in service to one's professional discipline and the larger Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community.

All areas of research specialization will be considered. Preference will be given to those whose research complements the department's current strengths, particularly those with experience in statistics. The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest in working collaboratively to enhance the department's mathematical curricular and co-curricular programs. Preference will be given to candidates with postdoctoral or equivalent research experience and the potential for attracting extramural funding. We welcome candidates with a demonstrated commitment to social justice, innovation, and collaboration in working with schools and university colleagues. Describe the specific job duties related to this competency
WSSU seeks committed and engaged faculty who will perform specific duties at a high level. These duties include but are not limited to the following:
Teaching and Advising

  • Teach undergraduate courses in mathematics either face-to-face or online and must communicate continuously with students to promote student success.
  • Construct sufficiently detailed course syllabi prior to the first class.
  • Teach each class section, create and present relevant course activities, provide written feedback in a timely fashion, and evaluate student performance.
  • Hold office hours each week.
  • Meet with the program coordinator regularly.
  • Advise and mentor students as assigned by the department chair.


Scholarship and Creative Activity

  • The ideal candidate must produce scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline area or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of the discipline.
  • Present research at well-respected professional conferences and meetings.
  • Engage in the procurement of extramural funds, potentially with interdisciplinary teams that advance scholarship and engagement activity within the mathematics discipline.

Service and Engagement

  • Attend departmental, College, and university meetings.
  • Serve on committees at the departmental, College, and university level.
  • Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations.
  • Assist discipline-specific professional organizations with reviews of conference proposals, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other professional engagement opportunities.
  • Serve on community-oriented committees, boards, and commissions relative to the discipline area.
