PennDOT is currently looking for skilled Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanics to join our team in supporting the Beaver County Maintenance Organization. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will be responsible for executing skilled maintenance and repair tasks on a diverse range of vehicles, including cars, trucks, tractors, and various types of construction machinery such as rollers, sweepers, and mixers, as well as powered hand tools. Your duties will encompass repairs on diesel equipment, with the exception of diagnostics, parts rebuilding, and the repair of air brake systems and diesel engine fuel injection systems, including injectors and pumps.

You will also implement a preventive maintenance program for vehicles, equipment, and components, which includes performing oil changes, conducting automotive mechanical diagnostics, executing tune-ups, changing tires, and repairing or replacing engine sub-assemblies. Additionally, you will handle cooling system repairs and adjustments, as well as work on suspension, electrical, heating and air conditioning, fuel, brake, steering, and driveline systems.

As part of your responsibilities, you will conduct official state safety and emissions inspections on vehicles that fall under your licensing category. This includes ensuring that all repairs meet regulatory specifications, performing road tests on vehicles, completing inspection stickers, and maintaining accurate State Inspection Records and associated documentation.

Your work will also involve servicing diesel equipment, which includes oil changes, filter replacements, and the installation of water pumps, gaskets, and other components. You will be tasked with repairing electrical systems, cooling systems, suspension, and driveline systems, along with executing various other repairs as necessary.

Field adjustments will be performed to ensure safe operation and to reduce wear on equipment. You will carry out minor repairs and preventive maintenance tasks, which involve cleaning and servicing equipment. Additionally, you will demonstrate repair techniques on assigned equipment to fellow employees and assist other Diesel Mechanics with major repairs. Keeping accurate equipment records will also be part of your duties.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program; or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License.
  • This position requires possession of a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.

Conditions of Employment:

  • All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • Certain positions may require employees to possess a valid Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • Certain positions require operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
