Job Overview

As an early member of the Hubbell Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) in Wilmington, MA, you will be a subject matter expert for laser powder bed fusion and other metal AM technologies. Our goal at the AM CoE is to drive production-scale printing of Hubbell parts and you will be a leader within this mission.

You will utilize your experience to drive production-scale manufacturing of additively manufactured metal parts. This role is a blend of application engineering, manufacturing engineering, and project management. Oversee the production of metal AM parts from project validation through to production at scale. Play a crucial role in bridging the gap between technology and practical application.

The successful candidate will be instrumental in advancing our in-house production capabilities, ensuring the manufacturability of components. Focused on driving production with a heavier focus on manufacturability over R&D. Be ready to stay focused, move fast, and prioritize a portfolio of projects. Responsible for leading application development across a broad range of metal AM technologies and for the operation of, and process development for, the L-PBF machine(s) on-site.

A Day In The Life

  • Manage a portfolio of metal AM projects, identifying and validating technical feasibility and business case, prioritizing based on value and impact to the organization, and leading application development from inception to production.
  • Assist with the establishment of the new Center of Excellence by leading the operation of laser powder bed fusion printers, establishing best practices and driving the technology to be repeatable and reliable.
  • Educate Hubbell employees on how to find best use-cases of additive manufacturing parts, conveying the benefits of the technology and how to align the design with the manufacturing process.
  • Support design engineering work packages for additive manufacturing projects.
  • Manage development of standard practices, design guides, and design rules related to metal additive manufacturing.
  • Support DfAM and utilize 3D modeling to optimize geometries for manufacturability.
  • Support additive manufacturing design reviews, technology selection, and product development.
  • Oversee the development of business cases for laser powder bed fusion and other metal AM technologies.
  • Responsible for meeting the schedule, scope, cost and technical targets for all efforts under their control.
  • Collaborate on designing, specifying, and developing applications, materials, and processes for LPBF and other additive manufacturing technologies.
  • Manage multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously with exceptional organizational skills


What will help you thrive in this role?

  • B.S. (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar.
  • Expert level knowledge of laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing, DfAM, and application development.
  • Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) Experience Required: Hands-on machine operation, ability to plan for and engage in support removal, de-powdering, and thermal post-processing, skilled at parameter, applications and process control improvements, and build file creation and optimization.
  • Skilled in CAD, SolidWorks/Inventor/PRO E (Creo), and FEA/calculations/simulation.
  • Experience working with production-scale applications of additive manufacturing.
  • Experience in a fast-paced entrepreneurial and/or hands-on manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with UL certifications and standards would be a bonus.
  • Technical experience with 3D printing copper, aluminum, bronze, and/or stainless steel for industrial applications.
  • Awareness of manufacturing trends & directions (both traditional and additive), a working knowledge of traditional manufacturing techniques a plus.
  • Willing and able to work on-site at our Wilmington, MA facility.
