The University Police Department at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Campus Police Officer Lead.

About the Opportunity

This position will develop and deliver professionally competent law enforcement training to our department, municipal, county, state and campus law enforcement agencies throughout the state. The incumbent will develop and provide safety and security programs for the campus community and protect life and property.

What You'll Do



  • Supervises all patrol, enforcement, community services and other activities of assigned shift in the supervisor's absence. Enforces rules, policies, and all state and federal laws. Assists in retraining of all assigned personnel as deficiencies are found. Responsible for all training and maintaining training records of all new personnel. Write weekly evaluations on new personnel and review evaluation with new personnel during their probationary period. Responsible for welfare of all assigned personnel.
  • Provides guidance to all officers performing normal duties. Trains and monitors their activities on observing persons and property as it relates to preventing crime and apprehending criminals. Assists the shift supervisor in completing evaluations of all assigned officers. Supervises crime prevention efforts of patrol staff including building checks, money escorts and being alert to hazards and/or deficiencies within the University's crime prevention program. Supervises patrol officers in monitoring fire hazards, safety hazards and other dangerous situations. Performs all these duties as well.
  • Oversees the records and training of all new officers, current officer and Campus Safety Officers. Works with shifts to evaluate new and current officers. Evaluate all new officers through the FTO program.
  • Works on recruitment strategies for new employees with Talent and Culture.
  • Serves as assistant to the Investigations Unit and supervises patrol officers in correct investigative procedures set forth by the Department. Conducts various field tests and carries out appropriate investigative procedures necessary to aid the Investigations Unit. Ensures that all follow-up reports are finished in a reasonable time period. Responsible for crime scene management.
  • Supervise the enforcement activities of assigned shift personnel, enforcing state and federal laws. Supervises all enforcement of all traffic and parking regulations. Supervises all arrests made by assigned personnel to assure compliance with Departmental policy and state laws and make arrests in accordance to same. Performs all these tasks as well.
  • Provides first-aid and/or CPR to sick or injured persons on campus and arranges proper transportation for such victims. Supervises and escorts personnel making large cash deposits. Ensures assigned personnel are trained and informed to answer questions and give directions and where to find this information. Assists stranded motorists. Assists in Crime Prevention Programs.


Pay Grade: 18

Qualifications

  • Associate degree required in criminal justice or related field or an equivalent combination of Criminal Justice experience (civilian or military).
  • A minimum of three (3) years law enforcement experience (1 year of WVU Police Dept. law enforcement officer experience preferred)
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

  • Ability to qualify in firearms, PR-24, defensive driving, defensive tactics, first-aid and CPR.
  • Communication/public relations skills.
  • Ability to complete basic police officer training academy or equivalent departmental training.
  • Ability to speak and write effective and clear, concise reports
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge and Understanding of Microsoft office, WVU PD Policies and Procedures, WVU rules and regulations and applicable laws.
  • Ability to define procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative recommendations.
