AES Clean Energy seeks a Director of Construction Management to lead the Construction Management group for projects in the WECC Region of the U.S.This person will report to the regional Senior Director of Construction Management and collaborate directly with all AES regional team members and EPCs. This person will lead a team of Construction Managers in the safe and reliable execution of our renewable energy projects to support AES's growth strategy.

The successful candidate will have a depth of experience with Construction Management leadership in the energy industry, team management, project execution and commissioning, utility interconnection, stakeholder management, and an ability to meet aggressive growth targets and project deadlines.

This is a remote position, however, we require that the candidate be located within the US territory.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and grow a highly motivated internal team responsible for construction management of AES Clean Energy projects
  • Develop, coach, and, most importantly, mentor internal talent, direct reports, and other AES team members using the AES All Together philosophy.
  • Identify impactful and high-potential team members for continued career development
  • Help build processes and training where the team grows together to strengthen the group, cross-train, and help across regions and workgroups.
  • Provide strategic direction and scale the capabilities of the Construction Management team in support of the company's growth strategy
  • Model and reinforce company culture and values, putting Safety first in all activities
  • Contribute to business and resource planning
  • Play a critical strategic role in portfolio planning, valuation, transaction, and construction of all new projects
  • Collaborate with Pre-Construction, Project Management, Engineering, QA/QA/CX (commissioning), Project Controls, and Continuous Improvement leadership to develop and refine project planning, scheduling, budgeting, reporting, and cost forecasting to ensure best-in-class project development support and construction execution
  • Manage construction progress tracking and coordination, site testing and commissioning, and utility interconnection construction
  • Support Project Management in contractor dispute resolution and project turnover to Asset Management/Operations. Build robust relationships with contractors, landowners, customers, local vendors and suppliers, governmental authorities, electric utilities, and other project collaborators to grow the company's execution capabilities and improve project efficiencies
  • In coordination with the Legal, Project Controls, Engineering, Pre-Construction, and Project Management teams, develop standardized construction agreements that provide flexibility for various contracting structures and implement lessons learned into form agreements and contracting processes
  • Work with the Pre-Construction team to identify and qualify construction contractors and downstream bidding and contract negotiations in existing and emerging markets
  • Support contract negotiations for EPC and construction service agreements
  • Establish and track Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) for the Construction Management team to objectively measure contractor performance
  • Provide team and executive-level reporting on project statuses, including schedules, commodity tracking, safety performance, and execution risks
  • Oversee a team of Construction Managers performing the following:
    • Track construction progress by maintaining comprehensive commodity tracking templates, ensuring project schedule visibility
    • Conduct periodic site visits for quality, safety, and overall execution oversight
    • Engage with local customers (government entities, contractors, landowners, PPA off-takers/customers, utilities, vendors, etc.) as needed to ensure the successful completion of projects
    • Lead utility construction management and energization on all regional projects in collaboration with the AES Interconnection Team
    • Develop all project landmark punch lists and manage contractor completion
    • Verify contractor compliance with all permits and ensure project(s) comply with all Federal, State, and Local requirements, as well as conditions associated with Development phase approvals
    • Coordinate with other Construction Management Directors to develop consistent construction management processes across AES Clean Energy

Requirements and skills:

  • 5+ years of energy generation construction experience, including PV and BESS projects, management experience required
  • Degree or equivalent experience in Engineering, Business, Construction, or related field preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and lead a Construction Management Organization, create and implement processes for project execution, track and measure indicators for successful project completion
  • Ability to build effective internal and external relationships and lead a team of Construction Managers with variable remote presence across multiple time zones
  • Excellent organizational, project management, planning, time management and partnership skills
  • Ability to work under pressure in a calm, professional manner to meet deadlines
  • Skills in reading and interpreting planning/scheduling software (Primavera P6 and MS Project)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer and analytical skills, proficient with MSFT Office suite
  • Willingness to travel 50% of the time

The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, life, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
