Summary:
The Intern role provides administrative and project support within assigned department, while gaining valuable, hands-on experience in a healthcare environment.

Over the summer, the intern in the Access to Care office at the Bramhall Patient Assistance Office will serve as the initial point of contact for consumers seeking help with insurance applications, medication coverage/assistance, medical bill payments, and medical records requests. Working with a diverse consumer population, the intern will collaborate frequently with Interpreter Services to meet language needs.

Daily tasks will include:

  • Reception Duties: Welcoming and checking in consumers, answering general questions, managing phone calls, and directing consumers to appropriate staff/departments/resources. The intern will handle the reception area, ensuring it is organized, welcoming, and equipped with relevant materials for consumers.
  • Administrative Support: Assisting with data entry, organizing and updating consumer files, managing appointment schedules, preparing documents, and supporting with paperwork related to insurance and medication assistance applications. The intern may also help with inventory management for office supplies, maintaining confidentiality standards, and completing other clerical tasks as needed.
  • Consumer Screening and Support: Conducting initial screenings to assess consumer's needs, and referring consumers to appropriate department/staff and/or state/local organizations/resources for additional support.
This hands-on role will provide the intern with valuable experience in consumer interaction, healthcare navigation, documentation, and essential administrative skills.

Preference will be given to undergraduate students with the following:

Academic Majors:

  • Social Work - for understanding social services and community resources.
  • Public Health - for knowledge of healthcare systems, social determinants of health (SDOH), and health equity.
  • Healthcare Administration - for skills in patient support, healthcare policies, and administrative duties. Human Services - for experience with community assistance programs and consumer support.
  • Psychology - for interpersonal skills and understanding diverse consumer needs.
  • Sociology - for insight into social and cultural factors that impact healthcare access.
  • Nursing - for familiarity with patient care and healthcare navigation.
  • Business Administration - for organizational and administrative skills in managing consumer cases.
  • Communications - for strong verbal and written communication skills, especially useful in a consumer-facing role.

Relevant Experiences:

  • Customer Service - for experience interacting with diverse populations and addressing consumer inquiries.
  • Nonprofit or Community Work - for experience with underserved communities and resource referrals.
  • Healthcare Setting Experience - such as a clinic or hospital volunteer, to understand the healthcare environment.
  • Administrative Support - for skills in filing, data entry, and general office tasks.
  • Interpreter Services or Multilingual Skills - to support non-English-speaking consumers. Experience with Insurance or Assistance Programs - for familiarity with application processes and eligibility requirements.
