Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Associate Director of Clinical Operations and guided by the procedures of the Medical Center, Ambulatory Services and the Cancer Center, the Assistant Manager assists the with ensuring the quality of patient care in the cancer center and infusion services and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. This position is responsible for assisting the nurse manager with all aspects of the operation, including but not limited to 1) recruiting, selecting, hiring and training staff, coaching and counseling, and completion of performance evaluations 2) assuring compliance with all regulatory and patient safety goals, 3) developing and implementing policies and procedures that assure a high level of quality care, 4) supports performance improvement initiatives and 5) maintains close working relationship with outpatient infusion pharmacy services to ensure alignment of goals that meet patient safety and service standards. This position supports the patient care manager in supervising all clinical and clerical staff of the infusion center, facilitating positive interaction among staff, patients and other departments. This position assumes full responsibility for the unit in the areas delegated and in the absence of the Patient Care Manager. The Assistant Manager is clinically competent at the CNIII level.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $113,500 - $258,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Cancer Centers on the Peninsula service the Oncology population at UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center as well as any non-oncology infusion needs of patients at UCSF. The treatments include but are not limited to chemotherapy, biotherapy, immunotherapy, hydration and electrolyte therapy, injections and blood draws, enzymes and iron infusions, antibiotics, and blood transfusions. The centers collectively consist of approximately 30 chairs/beds and treatments include research and standard of care infusions. The infusion centers are staffed by Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Medical Assistants, and Administrative Assistants.

Required Qualifications


  • A minimum of three (3) years nursing experience in an infusion and/or oncology setting
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing
  • Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise clinicians and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a clinic(s) / center(s). Strong knowledge of practice operations
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and self-development within the field of nursing and nursing administration
  • In depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations and internal policies
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaborations and problem solving with all levels of management and staff, consultants and outside agencies
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner
  • Strong leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines. Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives
  • Proven ability to organize, manage multiple priorities, and delegate work functions efficiently

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree
  • Two (2) years supervisory or demonstrated leadership experience or Master's degree in related field
  • Experience using EPIC EMR systems
  • Experience with QA/The Joint Commission process for quality improvement
  • Knowledge of current and emerging best practices and technologies in the clinic / center healthcare industry.
  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters

License/Certification


  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Card, OCN or other related certification
