Job Description:

The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) provides peer support services to residents with mental illness, substance abuse, and/or challenges related to homelessness. The PSS will function as a role model to peers, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and wellness, as well as serving as a consumer advocate, providing consumer information an peer support onsite and in the community.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • To have an understanding, appreciation and commitment to the mission and philosophy of National Church Residences.
  • Knowledge of the recovery process and the ability to effectively use own recovery story to provide support, validation, hope, and encouragement to residents.
  • Effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Capable of creating and facilitating a variety of group activities that support and strengthen recovery.
  • Able to interact sensitively and effectively with people with disabilities and from different cultural backgrounds.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn current electronic record management system.
  • Able to demonstrate clear, professional boundaries.
  • Knowledge of community based resources is preferred

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum two years of sobriety in mental health or substance abuse or homelessness
  • One year paid or volunteer experience working with individuals with mental illness, homelessness or substance abuse, or additional educational courses in human services.
  • Satisfactory completion of Peer Supporter training and Peer Supporter certification at time of hiring or within the first two months of employment.
  • Possess a valid Driver's License
  • Dependable, punctual and reliable

SCOPE AND EFFECT

The Peer Support Specialist assists and guides clients toward the identification and achievement of specific goals defined by the resident and specified in the goal plan. Work performed by the PSS will promote community socialization, recovery, self-advocacy, self-help, and development of natural supports. #jointhemission2
