About This Role

The HVAC Technician ensures the efficient operation of campus-wide heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC-R) systems through advanced maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair. Key responsibilities include:




  • System Maintenance and Repairs



    • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on industrial chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, and associated systems.
    • Maintain and upgrade electronic, pneumatic, and temperature/pressure control systems.



  • Energy Management



    • Operate and optimize energy management systems, adjusting controls and upgrading outdated components.



  • Specialized Equipment Support



    • Diagnose and repair HVAC-R components in scientific and commercial systems, including growth chambers, ultra-low freezers, and ammonia refrigeration.



  • HVAC Operations



    • Maintain central HVAC systems, fume hoods, and building air balance.
    • Troubleshoot advanced controls, variable frequency drives, and electrical/plumbing issues.



  • General Support



    • Perform additional duties as assigned, ensuring compliance with safety standards and building codes.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Two years of relevant experience
  • Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by a hiring manager.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Two years of experience in refrigeration-Air/conditioning repair work.
  • Prefer four years of experience in refrigeration and air conditioning work including two at the journey level.
  • Prefer journey level experience in electronic control service and repair. Prefer journey level experience in heating systems including electric, gas fired, heat pump, steam, and hot water.


Other Requirements:



  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Valid EPA Refrigerant Recovery Certificate with a universal rating.
  • Medical certification for respirator use within probationary period. Maintain medical certification for respirator annually.
  • Daily: All types of HVAC equipment, state vehicles, EMS computer software, Electrical meters, AIMS computer software, electrical safety equipment, oxygen-acetylene torches, vacuum pumps, refrigerant recovery equipment, and refrigeration gauges.
  • Subject to on-call, standby and inclement weather response. This position is essential.
