Summary of Job Duties:The Department of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith invites applications for an Instructor/Assistant Professor of Mathematics to begin in August 2025. The incumbent is expected to teach undergraduate mathematics and statistics courses, including general education, service, and mathematics/statistics major/minor courses. The position reports to the Department Chair of Mathematics. Qualifications:

Required Education & Work Experience: Minimum requirements for appointment as instructor include an earned master's degree in mathematics, statistics, or mathematics education that includes a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in mathematics and one year of college-level teaching experience. For appointment as assistant professor a doctorate in mathematics, statistics, or mathematics education with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in mathematics is required. A.B.D. will be considered for the position with reappointment contingent upon completion of the doctorate.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The following competencies are required for the essential functions of this position:

  • Ability to effectively teach a range of entry-level general education mathematics courses, many to non-majors and first-generation students
  • Ability to teach courses in calculus and other areas serving various majors
  • Ability to teach upper-level courses in mathematics/statistics supporting the major and minors in mathematics and statistics, including directing undergraduate research
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching, including the utilization of classroom technology and well-developed communication skills
  • Demonstration of deep pedagogical knowledge of mathematics and connections among mathematical ideas
  • Commitment to growth in all aspects of a faculty member, including teaching, scholarship, and service

Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Percentages are approximate and based on title at hire.

  • 70% Classroom instruction, at least 24 credit hours of undergraduate teaching per year (in mathematics and related areas).
  • 20% Scholarly activity, including directing undergraduate research as assigned (Assistant Professor rank)
  • 10% Service to the department, college, university, and profession, including student recruitment, retention, and advising as well as committees and assessment duties

  • Teaching in both in-person and online formats as assigned
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to advise, instruct, manage, motivate, and evaluate students.
  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Maintaining student records and communicating regularly with students
  • Maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating collaboratively to foster teamwork
  • Maintaining a good work ethic, including consistent on-time attendance
  • Observing all relevant university and department procedures and policies.

Salary Information:

Minimum salary of $49,000 per year. Final salary commensurate with education and experience.
